Solomon announces upgrades to Salter Grove playground

Posted

Mayor Joseph Solomon announced Wednesday afternoon that bids will be solicited this winter in preparation for extensive upgrades to the playground at Salter Grove Memorial Park, located off Narragansett Parkway.

The project will be funded through a $100,000 Rhode Island Department of Recreation Grant. The Rhode Island Foundation has also awarded a grant to the Friends of Salter Grove (FOSG) to design and fabricate new benches. City workers will provide the required grant match with in-kind labor, to include all site clearing, grading and finish site work, Solomon said. The play structure and other site furnishings will be installed by the supplier.

“The improvements at Salter Grove will ensure that our children have a safe, fun place to play,” Solomon said. “A community is only as strong as its neighborhoods, and a modern, attractive new playground will be a terrific enhancement in that area. This project is just one of several that will be underway in the coming months as we work to make sorely needed improvements to playgrounds and recreational facilities throughout Warwick. We are fortunate to have this generous grant funding – and the hard work of our talented municipal employees – to make these improvements a reality.”

The project will include removal of the existing, dilapidated playground structure, and the installation of four new swings as well as a new structure consisting of a large net climber, slide, pod steppers and other components.

Significant safety and accessibility improvements will also be made and include a path to accommodate wheelchair access to the play area, as well as a dedicated handicapped parking space along the entry road. Safety surfacing will be installed under all elevated play components.

General landscape enhancements, new tables and other site furnishings are also planned for the playground. FOSG is working on the design and fabrication of the custom curvilinear benches paid for by the RI Foundation grant, the Mayor said.

Solomon said the bids that will be solicited this winter are relative to the play structure, site furnishings and limited installation work. Work is slated to begin in April, with an anticipated completion date of July 2019.

    Dear Paul Huff,

I agree that Mickey Stevens is in dire need of a facelift but let's applaud the Salter Grove one. With no large money from Warwick taxpayers Warwick becomes more attractive to new visitors that might become new taxpayers, with this new-look. I have to admit, it's a good thing and Mayor Solomon deserves credit. I hope you feel the same way.

    Dear Justanidiot,

Thank you for continuing to keep me in your comments. You're right. 2020 is right around the corner. Have you noticed that Scal1024, and Rob Cote haven't commented hardly at all since the election. They scream that they are NOT henchmen for Joe Solomon yet the stop "henching" as soon as the election is over. Cote is a proven liar and an admitted thief. I proved that. Scal is just an errand boy for those lies. Neither has spent a dollar or a minute, running for office but give them a talking point and they think they are a party balloon for all to look at. I guess that party balloon has run out of air.

    Merry Christmas Paul and Justanidiot.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

Justanidiot, I'm sure you again see the obvious defects in the two-time election rejects' comments -- instead of simply agreeing with you, he uses this website to rehash his juvenile grievances against other commenters and make false statements about them. Rob Cote removed the two-time election reject's illegal campaign signs. That does not make him "a thief," and the Warwick Police Department proved that by not charging him with anything.

And the fact that two other commenters have not used this site as frequently as him since the election -- nor made such embarrassing spectacles of themselves, it should be noted -- does not somehow mean the two-time election reject has any more credibility now than he had before, which was zero.

I hope you and PaulHuff will join me and the thousands of honest, taxpaying voters who will celebrate their winter holidays, happy in the knowledge that the two-time election reject will continue to have zero influence or effect on anything that happens in Warwick.

If you don't think that former city employees deserve the money they receive after employment then you work to change it. That is what is happening with the teachers and fire union. The city is making changes because it is no longer feasible to give out the amount of money they have in the past. You are calling Mark Carruolo a thief because he has received his city approved pension. That isn't the definition of the word RC.

Thank you, Cat. The two-time election reject long ago gave up any resemblance to a logical or rational person.

His latest comment accusing others of illegal activities that were 100% allowed under the law is further proof of that.

We also know, as has been proved multiple times and reported by the Beacon, that he lived in his former residence for three years without paying taxes, later losing the property to tax sale. He is hardly someone who should be commenting on "rubbing the nose" of honest, taxpaying Warwick residents.

When he actually contacts Mr. Carruolo and learns that he has been engaging in this disgraceful behavior toward someone who he is falsely accusing of using this screen name, his own words will come back to haunt him:

"You should have kept your big mouth shut."

Wow, Cat. You've really brought out the two-time election reject's double-speak today:

Carruolo "isn't a thief" based on fact, but he's still a thief just because the two-time election reject thinks so.

And then he sets himself up as judge of whether someone "deserves" their pension and demands that you agree.

Try as he might, he won't distract attention from the spectacle he's making of himself.

This is good, improving parks is a great part of The Solomon Plan. Huff is also right, Mickey Stevens needs a revamp too, and not just some touch up paint. Maybe we cant afford that right away but it should be on the list, which maybe it is under The Solomon Plan.

I am cat2222. I didn't realize I had shortened the name until you pointed it out.

I may not agree with the pension system as it currently stands but I will not call someone a thief for benefiting from a legal contracted pension. That is out of bounds and could potentially land you in legal trouble. Why are you like this? Why are you on some strange vendetta against a guy that no longer works for the city and hasn't been bothering you? So very strange and creepy.

Cat, for most people it would be enough that facts don't support their claims to stop them from repeating those claims.

Not the double election loser, though.

His statement that "he, and Avedisian and others, CREATED that Warwick legislation" is a bald-faced lie. Warwick's pension system has been in place for decades.

And then, true to form, he has to surpass even this disgraceful lying with threats and false allegations of crimes against someone who is not using this screen name, and who he admits to never contacting to test his false accusations.

You're right, this is strange and creepy behavior. The only thing to make it worse would be if the double election reject never met Mark Carruolo at all and thus has no basis except his delusional ideas for this continued disgraceful activity.
