Sonya’s of Cranston is a prom fairy godmother

Prom. Just the word itself conjures up images of sparkly, flowing, “make me a princess” dresses. However, for some girls that perfect dress is not financially practical.

That is where Sonya’s comes in. The store donated 10 dresses. The prices were in the area of $300 to $400, with tags still on each gown. They were all brand new.

“I am so grateful that Sonya [Janigian, the store’s owner] and her staff are willing to help our students. I have been a customer of hers for many years and I know that she is a thoughtful, kind person, as is all of her family. Her donation did not come as a surprise, as she is always very generous. However, I am still extremely appreciative of her thoughtfulness,” said Jeannine Nota-Masse, assistant superintendent of Cranston Public Schools.

Working closely with Cranston East English teacher Andrea DiCicco, Nota-Masse was able to find a home for seven dresses.

“I can’t thank Andrea enough for her assistance with this project. She was able to find the perfect girls who needed perfect dresses. Hopefully, they enjoyed a perfect night at their prom,” she said.

Sonya’s holds in high regard the motto of giving back to the community.

“By donating 10 gowns, it’s one way for us to contribute and help others in need in our own town. Our hope is to make some young girls’ dreams come true by dressing them in fabulous gowns,” said Janigian.
