State offers online residential guide to going solar

The State of Rhode Island has released the RI Residential Guide to Going Solar, a handbook for homeowners to help them navigate the many choices involved with installing a roof-mounted solar array.

“The availability of state programs and federal tax credits makes it an ideal time for Rhode Island homeowners to explore their options and find out if solar is right for them,” said State Energy Commissioner Carol Grant in a release. “This guide will help them understand the process for installing a residential solar array and make informed decisions.”

“The fact that we need this guide is a testament to the progress we’ve made toward making solar arrays readily available to consumers in Rhode Island,” said Sen. Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence) who sponsored legislation this year seeking the creation of the guide.

“With all the options for installers and financing, it’s important that consumers know their rights and be well-equipped to make the best choice for their home. This very helpful guide gives Rhode Islanders everything they need to know to go solar. With that information, more people will feel confident that they can make an investment that pays off for their household, the environment and energy consumers throughout the state.”

The Residential Guide to Going Solar covers a variety of topics for homeowners who are interested learning more about installing a solar array, including the advantages of going solar; the technology, how it works and system options; how to prepare a home by making it energy efficient; ideal solar system size, angle and position; available state and federal incentives; expected cost savings and home value appreciation; system maintenance and warranties; buying versus leasing and how to select an installer.

The guide is a product of the RI Office of Energy Resources, the Office of the Attorney General, the Public Utilities Commission, and the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers.

The Residential Guide to Going Solar is available as a free download from the RI Office of Energy Resources website at www.energy.ri.gov/documents/solar/Guide-to-Going-Solar.pdf.
