Step into the holidays at Clouds Hill Museum

We “stepped into the holidays” last weekend at Warwick’s beautiful 1870s Victorian home, now decorated for the holidays. As we wandered through the 12 rooms, furnished mostly with their original furniture, draperies and accessories, we enjoyed the festive Christmas decorations that had been added for the season.

The house, overlooking Greenwich Bay, was built in 1872 by William Smith Slater for his daughter Elizabeth on her marriage to Alfred Augustus Reed Jr. and has remained in the family since it was built, passing from female to female until reaching Anne Holt, its current owner.

We first discovered Clouds Hill when we attended Music on the Hill last summer and were impressed with the well-kept grounds. Built as a summer home, the house sits on 30 acres of land that houses horses and features a large variety of trees.

After visiting the 12 rooms, we joined others in the kitchen for ginger cookies and hot cider, as Anne told stories about growing up in the house. There is so much to see in the house, including a dollhouse furnished with many original miniatures and a full miniature Christmas village. Volunteers are on hand during the festivities.

“Step Into the Holidays” is open this Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15 and next Saturday December 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $6 for military and college students with ID and $5 for children 12 and under. If you can’t make it to one of these prescheduled openings, call 884-9490 to arrange a time. Clouds Hill is located at 4157 Post Road in Warwick, just before the East Greenwich line.
