Sun glare suspected in pedestrian accident

Posted

On Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:38 a.m. the Warwick Police Department responded to the area of 300 Lambert Lind Highway (Rte. 5) for a crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian.

Warwick Police officers arrived on scene and found an unresponsive 68-year-old male lying in the southbound lanes of Lambert Lind. The male had an obvious head injury and was without a detectable pulse. WPD Officers initiated CPR and, upon arrival of a Warwick Fire Department Ambulance, he was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.

Initial investigation shows the male had entered the roadway in the area of the crosswalk in front of Greenwich Village Apartments, crossing from east to west. He was struck by a Hyundai sedan as he entered the southbound side of the roadway. The Hyundai was operating southerly in the left-hand lane of travel. The operator and several witnesses stopped immediately after the collision and called 9-1-1.

The Warwick Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is investigating the accident. The reconstruction team’s initial investigation has determined that speed, alcohol and distracted driving did not appear to be involved. It is believed that sun glare on the roadway is a significant factor in this crash. It is unknown at this time if the

pedestrian activated the crosswalk signal prior to entering the roadway.

Any person with information related to the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at (401) 468-4293. Please contact Sgt. Robert T. Hart.

On Dec. 1, the pedestrian was identified as David J. Quinn. According to an updated police department press release, Quinn is still listed as being in critical condition but is awake and able to speak.
