Hendricken swim claims 32nd state title

The Bishop Hendricken swim team won the state championship over the weekend at Brown University, claiming its 28th state title in 29 years.

The Hawks cruised to 380 points overall, with Barrington finishing second place with 279. South County finished third with 203.

“It starts with the seniors. Michael Ryan swam unbelievable, Paul Fedorenko, Matt Levesque, Max Picard. CJ Sheldon, what can I say? He’s been one of the best freestylers in Hendricken history. They swam unbelievable, right down the line. Casey McQuesten, Alex Walsh, freshmen, sophomores. That’s what it is all about with these guys … being part of a team,” said Hendricken coach Dave Hanson after the win.

Hendricken has cemented its place as the premier swimming program in the state, and continued on its run over dominance that has spanned nearly three decades. Hard work and pride was key to this year’s success, according to Hanson.

“Part of it is tradition, but we also work very hard. These guys don’t want to let the past down. They have a lot of pride in themselves. I think about what we graduated last year and I never thought that we would be this good this year. We scored 380 points, that’s unbelievable,” said Hanson. “They’re a tough bunch of kids. They may not be the most talented, but we got contributions from everybody and that was the important thing.” Here is a look at some of the results from the boys and girls state swimming championships: BOYS

CJ Sheldon took first in the 200 free as well as the 100 free. The Hendricken team of Sheldon, John Walden, Paul Fedorenko and Aidan Blanchette won the 200 relay, while Walden, Sheldon, Michael Ryan and John Smith won the 400 relay.

The team of Smith, Blanchette, Grant Dator and Ryan McPherson would take second place in the 200 medley relay while Ryan took second in the 500 free. Dator also finished second in the 100 breaststroke.

Ryan placed third for the Hawks in the 200 free while Blanchette took fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 50 free. Smith would capture fifth in the butterfly as well. Walden also took fourth in the 500 free. GIRLS

Abigail Ignagni took fifth in the 50 free for Toll Gate as well as seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

The Toll Gate relay team of Alyssa O’Keefe, Ignagni, Brooke Menard and Sophie Amore took 16th in the medley, as well as 16th in the 200 free relay. Menard would also take 15th in the 100 breaststroke.
