'Team Langevin alumna' ready to tell RIDE's stories

After getting her start at the Beacon and spending nearly four years as Congressman Jim Langevin’s communications director, Meg Geoghegan is on her way to a new venture as director of communications at the Rhode Island Department of Education.

Geoghegan, a Warwick native, began her time at the Beacon as an intern after her freshman year at Northeastern University. She returned every summer to freelance and became part of the full-time staff after she graduated. She temporarily took on the role of editing the Cranston Herald and Johnston Sun Rise, which later became a permanent gig when her predecessor left the position. Geoghegan later moved on to work for Langevin, but not before meeting her husband, William, while she was still working for the papers.

William was the sports editor for all three Beacon Communications publications. He is now sports editor of The Independent.

“I got a lot out of my Beacon experience in many ways – both personal and professional,” she said with a laugh.

At RIDE, Geoghegan will take the place of the recently retired Elliot Krieger at a salary of $98,000. She’s “really excited” for the tasks ahead. She’ll be performing many of the same duties she always has, including writing and keeping social media up to date. However, she looks at each of her endeavors as different opportunities to tell new stories, be it through reporting the accounts of people in local communities, helping a congressman share his own goals with his constituents, or detailing the intersection of students and educators with the economy.

Geoghegan is interested in helping to tell RIDE’s “story” as it will allow her to dive deeper into one of the policy areas in which her former boss had a focus. She worked on crafting a message on cybersecurity and career and tech education at a congressional level through Langevin and is eager to explore that message at a state level, especially since she’s seen a growing importance in regards to STEM education.

As this week will be her last with the congressman, Geoghegan said Langevin’s office is currently searching for someone to take her place and hopes to hire someone as soon as possible.

“Ultimately, what I’ve loved the most is working for someone I really admire and respect. I don’t think I could do it for just anyone, but Jim Langevin is just a genuinely good person,” she said. “He’s someone I’m really going to miss. I’ll always be a Team Langevin alumna.”

Maybe she can get "NO STORY HERE" John Howell, not Carnevale (LOL), to write something in his propaganda pamphlet for Mayor Avedisian, and other elected politicians in Warwick, about unethical actions of Warwick Councilwoman Donna Travis. He has known about everything since August 2016, before the November election, but protected her by refusing to publish anything to inform Ward Six voters about her conduct. The Providence Journal has run an article. Channel 12 Walt Buteau has done 3 stories. The RI Ethics Commission has accepted 2 complaints involving four allegations, has found probable cause to move to FULL investigation/adjudication, AND STILL HE PRINTS NOTHING. Warwick residents should cancel their subscriptions to this rag, and get facts elsewhere.
