Assistant Sports Editor The Burrillville football team continued its early-season dominance with a 40-6 victory over Toll Gate on Saturday afternoon, using two scores before halftime to put the game out of reach.
The Broncos already held a commanding 21-0 lead with two minutes to go in the first half, and it looked like it would stay that way. Toll Gate’s defense forced a third-and-long deep in Broncos’ territory, but quarterback Zach Lefebvre hit his favorite weapon, junior Nick Deering, for a 55-yard gain.
The Titans would eventually force a fourth-and-15 at the Burrillville 41, but again Lefebvre found a way. The senior fired a 41-yard pass perfectly into the arms of Deering in the end zone to make it a four-score game.
The home side still wasn’t satisfied with its lead, though. Burrillville pooched an onside kick to the left sideline, where Cyrus Sikes fell on the football to give possession right back to the Broncos. Lefebvre found Deering again across the middle, where he broke a few tackles en route to a 47-yard touchdown.
Burrillville took a 34-0 advantage into halftime, and the Titans couldn’t recover. Quarterback Anthony Vann would scramble for a touchdown on the last play of the game, but the result was already in the books.
The Titans (1-2) will look to rebound against Central Falls (2-1) this Friday on the road. The Warriors are coming off a tough defeat of their own, a 45-19 loss to Tiverton.
