Titans look to contend

Toll Gate football is set to kick off the 2019 campaign, which it will play in Division IV.

The Titans will have eight seniors on this year’s roster with Elijah Alcantara, Matthew Banspach, Ethan Durand, Gage Fallela, Kenny Morel, Christian Rapoza, Bryce Riddle and Anthony Shaw.

Greyson Pasquina, a junior, will start at quarterback for the second straight season as well as cornerback when he is on defense.

Pasquina’s No. 1 wide receiver will be Anthony Shaw, a senior, who plays the wide out position while Christian Rapoza will play slot receiver and wingback.

On defense, Shaw will be at free safety while Rapoza will take on outside linebacker.

Shaw is also the leading candidate for the kickoff return and punt return roles on the special teams unit.

At running back will be Morel, a senior.

“We expect big things from Kenny this year,” Toll Gate coach James Stringfellow said. “I know finishing out his senior year he wants to finish on top and I think he’s probably one of the best backs in our division.”

Durand, a senior, will be playing linebacker and tight end and John Olink, a junior, will be at defensive tackle.

Including Olink, there will be seven juniors on the team, 17 sophomores and 14 freshmen.

“We’re very young this year coming into the season,” Stringfellow said. “So, it’s a work in progress.”

But that doesn’t mean Stringfellow doesn’t expect his team to make another run to the postseason like it did the past two seasons.

“Our goal every year is to go in there and make the playoffs,” Stringfellow said. “And the team that we have this year is definitely a playoff team, we feel as a coaching staff. The kids that were graduated last year, we also kind of replaced this year.”

“So, we definitely want to make a playoff run just like we want to do every year,” Stringfellow reiterated. “That’s how we go into every season. Our main goal is to make the playoffs and if we make the playoffs, our main goal is to take it one game at a time.”

But it won’t be easy.

“We’re in a tough division,” Stringfellow said. “Even though it’s D-IV, Ponaganset’s going to be good again, North Smithfield’s going to be good again, and Tiverton’s going to be good again. And then, we have Davies as a new team in our league and nobody has seen how they’re going to be. So, it’s up in the air.”

“We’ve got the cross over games with Narragansett and Pilgrim,” Stringfellow added. “So, it’s going to be a challenging schedule, but we should be fine and hopefully make the playoffs.”

Assisting Stringfellow on the sidelines will be Jack Paliotte, the offensive coordinator, Nick Salois, the defensive coordinator, PJ Stringfellow, the receivers and defensive backs coach, and Matt Raso and Rob Pacifico, who will coach the offensive and defensive lines. Also helping out the squad will be Jeff Howe and Mitch Hawkins, with the latter being a former Toll Gate player.
