The big disaster movie of the year was “Volcano” with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche. Mike Myers starred in “Austin Powers,” one of the dumbest comedies of the year. Robin Williams and Billy Crystal starred in “Father’s Day,” a “cute little comedy.” Bruce Willis played a retired “space fighter” in “The Fifth Element.”

“Code of Ethics” was a murder/mystery movie shot in Rhode Island. Many local actors had small roles, including Keith Brava, Dan Welch, Barbara Orson, Barbara Blossom and Ed Regine. Scenes were shot at the former Cameron’s Drug Store in Pawtuxet Village, Buddy Cianci’s office and the State House.

The Count Basie Orchestra was at PPAC. So was “Grease” and “Carousel.”

Cranston’s own Betty Nolan starred in “Squabbles” at City Nights Theatre in Pawtucket.

Our grandson, Alex Miller, played a Munchkin in the East Greenwich Meadowbrook Farms School production of “Land of Oz,” along with many other second graders. Grandma and Grandpa were there for the opening night performance. Alas, Alex decided not to follow his acting career but instead became a doctor.

The West Bay Chorale, under Musical Director Robert C. Cleasby, presented “The Magical Musical Tour” at Warwick Vets. Guest artists were the Hendricken High School Jazz Band under the direction of Richard Price.

All movies were $2 at the old Meadowbrook Cinema, except for the weekly Saturday at Midnight “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” in its 506th week, which was $5.

Remember the old Bay Queen cruises that featured Charlie Hall and the Ocean State Follies, Ronnie Rose, Frank Santos Jr. and Robyn Lynn?
