*** Don

(18th Century English court drama)

This naughty 18th century movie centers around activities in the court of Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman), the sickly, hot-tempered, politically inept Queen of England. Abigail (Emma Stone), a new servant, enters her court and slowly and insidiously vies for her favor with Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), her closest friend and adviser.

The movie provides a fun look at what the upper crust do for amusement, some of which turns out to be a bit raunchy. Abigail will go to any length to win over the queen, who treats her like dirt at times and at other times shows great affection...in the physical sense. Abigail was once a lady, but isn't always ladylike as she plots to be "the favourite.”

Meanwhile, war wages between England and France and the politicians await impatiently for vital decisions from their queen.

The acting by the three characters is terrific, and the background music and scenes in and around the palace are stunning. My problem with the movie is that I didn't care about the three individuals, all of whom could be quite nasty One thing is for sure, the story gives you a different perspective on Queen Anne.

Rated a very big R. Yes, queens use that four-letter word and also engage in prurient behavior.
