They dashed for the dough

After a one-year hiatus, Iggy’s Doughboy Dash to raise funds to fight Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) returned to Oakland Beach Sunday with more than 350 people running and walking the 5K.

While once a requirement to qualify, many paused at the halfway mark to indulge in a doughboy, which they washed down with gulps of water. Those who took the time to eat and then run received a mark on their wrist to prove they had participated in this most unusual of runs inspired by Andrew Martin and Zach McMillan, both from Warwick who suffer from the rare disease.

Even before participants lined up behind a Corvette with Iggy’s mascot doughboy in the passenger seat, the event had raised more than $40,000 said David Gravino. Gravino, owner of Iggy’s with his sister, Maryann Soares, has sponsored the dash since it was first held. In addition to the 5K, organizers held a raffle and solicited donations.

Both Andrew and Zach were present, watching as runners registered at Iggy’s Boardwalk and chatted it up with city officials supporting the cause, including Fire Chief James McLaughlin, whose retirement coincided with the day of the dash. Mayors Scott Avedisian and Allan Fung were present, although neither took to the course through Oakland Beach. Council President Joseph Solomon, who will take on the role of acting mayor when Avedisian leaves on May 15 to head up the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, was in attendance as was his son, Rep. Joseph Solomon, and Ward 6 Councilwoman Donna Travis.

The senior Solomon admitted dough of another kind making up the city budget is foremost in his thoughts at this time. The administration has until May 15 to deliver the budget to the council. That promises to be a challenge, as the council is faced with higher costs resulting from contract negotiations and a structural deficit resulting from the use of $4.2 million from reserves to balance the current budget.

A-T is a rare genetic disease that affects approximately one in 40,000 children. The disease causes progressive loss of muscle control, immune system problems, extreme fatigue and a high rate of cancer.

While the mood was upbeat, Andrew and Zach’s presence was reason to reflect on what these two boys and their families have gone through. Now 18 and a graduate of Pilgrim High, Andrew is taking some classes at CCRI. His left arm was amputated last month because of cancer.

Zach, who is 12, attends Veterans Junior High School, where he is an honor student and plays unified basketball.

Several politicians were there for the photo op. Joe Solomon Sr. was one of them. Insiders have said he will be a candidate for Mayor of Warwick. Rumor is that he will announce shortly.

I was there too. I already am a Democratic candidate for Mayor of Warwick and I announced several months ago. Sunday, I donated personal money to A-T and I also participated in the race. I even surprised myself when I was able to finish. I came in 208th. There is a big difference between Joe and me. He will show up just for the pictures. I will show up to participate. The voters will decide what kind of Mayor they prefer.

    Happy Spring everyone.

    - "Insiders have said he will be a candidate for Mayor of Warwick. Rumor is that he will announce shortly."

Council President Solomon told the Beacon that he plans to run for mayor -- it is reported in this article: http://warwickonline.com/stories/avedisian-leaving-to-head-ripta,133458?#comments

Here is the direct quote, which the make-believe mayor is ignoring to make such a delusional statement: "Solomon unequivocally said, 'Yes, I will be a candidate for mayor.'"

    - "There is a big difference between Joe and me... The voters will decide what kind of Mayor they prefer."

Honest, taxpaying voters will support Council President Solomon, an actual leader and election winner who has consistently paid the property taxes on his residence, and reject the make-believe mayor who makes up titles for himself, engages in conspiracy theories, consistently lies about basic facts, and has a history of tax delinquencies.

I would note to readers Rick Corrente has never launched a single attack at the city council. He certainly has never launched an attack at Joe Solomon. Notice what a political opportunist Rick is. As soon as councilman Solomon was named interim mayor, announcing he was running (although the fake mayor is too stupid to know that already)Corrente goes into attack mode. This a member of his own party. Well, a member of his new party. We all remember in 2014 Rick was a member of the tea party, when that was more politically convenient for him.

Rick Corrente is nothing but a lying, pandering, fraud. Just focus on his behavior and relationship with councilman Solomon alone. He never had a critical word until now. I wonder why? More lies will be spewed from the fake, lying, lowlife, pandering, illegal sign hanger. Warwick will be better off when Councilman Solomon finally puts this idiot to bed.

Scal, I'm sure the make-believe mayor's back-stabbing will have as much effect on the council president as his prior partisan support did: Zero.

That, of course, will not stop the make-believe mayor from humiliating himself -- meaning honest, taxpaying voters will have an easy decision to make when they overwhelmingly reject his candidacy again.

    Dear Scal1024,

Wow, that was harsh, even for a coward like you who doesn't even have the courage to speak using your own name.

For the record, I didn't "launch an attack" against Joe Solomon. I just stated the facts of the event. Fact: Joe was there to get his picture taken. Fact: I was there to donate personal money and participate in the charitable event.

    No attack Scal. Just facts.

The voters can decide which kind of Mayor they prefer to have.

    One interesting side note.

I have never been a member of the Tea Party. I have never attended one meeting of the Tea Party. I have never knowingly MET a member of the Tea Party. I HAVE said "We are no longer Taxed Enough Already in Warwick. We are now TBAR'd! Taxed Beyond All Recognition." Avedisian raised taxes EVERY YEAR FOR 17 YEARS IN A ROW! Councilman Joe Solomon voted in favor of every tax increase... Until my 700 day $40,000 campaign happened.

Scal has a wild and dishonest imagination. His/her job is to discredit me. It's the job of a henchman. Little wonder he's/she's afraid to use his/her real name. I don't know (for certain) who Scal1024 and CrickeeRaven are but it's clear what their role is.

They must have been promised a lot.

    Happy Spring Scal1024.

    Happy Spring everyone.

Rick, I thought I worked for Mayor Avedesian? Now I work for Councilman Solomon. I'm sure after you lose you'll suggest I work at the Board of Elections. Once again, we see erratic behavior from the fake mayor. He gets called out on never being critical of Joe Solomon until Mr Solomon declared for mayor, and suddenly my comments are "harsh"? From the man who suggested the Mayor was responsible for the drowning death of a child? Excuse me if I won't be lectured on what a coward is by a lying fraud like you!

You will continue to be exposed for lying, manipulative tax delinquent you are. Just as CrickeeRaven has done by sharing the links to your tax delinquency, as well as linking where it shows your taxes were paid by the current landlord of your campaign headquarters.

Again, notice the pivot from Corrente. He referred to this City Council as: "The Taxpayers City Council"- June 7th '17

and also went on to say:

"Congratulations to NINE of the hardest working people on the Council Warwick has ever had." June 7th '17

Its amazing Rick didn't think Joe Solomon was all about photo ops then. Once Mr Solomon declared for Mayor, Rick Corrente couldn't wait to try and drag his name through the mud.

Which is it Rick? How can both be true? Or do you try to tear down any and every person that gets in your way?

By the way what about the $176.87 in late car tax payments you made on March 24th 2017? You've stated you only missed 1 payment and it was for 1 penny? How is it on the cities website they have you paying delinquent taxes at a later date?

Just as I've been saying...you are a liar, a fraud and a tax delinquent. The ACTUAL taxpayers of Warwick deserve better than a tax delinquent. I look forward to another embarrassing showing come election time.

You know, Scal, it's really a defect in the make-believe mayor's character that he continues to whine about other commenters using screen names instead of actually telling the truth and acknowledging facts.

The facts about the make-believe mayor are not any less true because the person presenting them is writing under a pseudonym. It's also pretty pathetic that he would accuse you, essentially, of hiding something -- when he has completely failed to explain why his current office landlord previously paid his property taxes, and has started paying office rent through his business instead of his campaign to avoid having to report the payments.

He also fails at realizing that voters are not stupid people. When he repeats lies about how the FY18 budget was passed, for example, or how his campaign somehow stopped a tax increase, he's just showing how little regard he has for other peoples' intelligence.

Like this latest example: "Councilman Joe Solomon voted in favor of every tax increase... Until my 700 day $40,000 campaign happened."

If one didn't know better, one would think that the FY18 budget didn't include a tax increase and that the make-believe mayor's failed 2016 campaign had something to do with it.

Of course, many people do know better. The FY18 budget increased tax revenue and kept the tax rate the same. There's no tax cut in the FY18 budget -- and, in fact, because of the council's decisions on the budget, Warwick enters FY19 with a $4.2 million operating deficit that will have to be funded.

Intelligent people realize that the make-believe mayor is falsely claiming credit for a tax cut [because the tax cut didn't happen], and is also saying that he supports creating deficits in future budgets for the sake of short-term political gain.

As much as he believes otherwise, Warwick voters will not be fooled into electing him. They realize that the more he talks, the less intelligent [and intelligible] he sounds.

Do you know for a fact that Solomon didn't donate money? Maybe he chose to do it quietly instead of announcing it in the comment section of the Beacon.

Great point Kammy. Nothing stops Corrente from making baseless claims about topics he has little information about.

I've noticed how Rick Corrente didn't find his way into the comment section until the very moment he declared he was running in '15. I imagine if we poked around at his record we will see thats when he started "caring" about Warwick Pond, the airport, schools (even though he knows nothing about them), city council meetings or even the Doughboy Dash. Why the sudden change?

Rick cares so much that he didn't even thank Iggys and the Gravino family in his comments for hosting such an awesome, charitable event that raises $$$ for a great cause. Instead its right into politics and how "good of a person he is", and how he made a "small donation". No shame in this pathetic failure whatsoever.

When will this embarrassing $40,000+ failure of a campaign end for this tax delinquent?

"I don't know (for certain) who Scal1024 and CrickeeRaven are but it's clear what their role is. They must have been promised a lot," writes the make-believe mayor.

Well, Scal, I certainly have no problem being associated with another Warwick resident and voter who is not afraid of the make-believe mayor's bluster, and tells the truth about him.

It's yet another failure of his that he thinks only people who are somehow "connected" can see through his false claims, and that telling the truth is some kind of conspiracy against him.

Apparently it's too hard for the make-believe mayor to understand that there are intelligent and honest people in Warwick who will not be tricked or fooled into supporting him. The 26,000+ voters who rejected his candidacy in 2016 were smart enough to elect every other Democratic candidate except him and Pat Morgan's challenger in a district that is mostly in West Warwick; that the make-believe mayor ignores the logical conclusion -- that the majority of voters did not and do not consider him fit for office -- is the latest of many, many defects in his thinking that he has been eager to present to readers of this website for nearly three years.

I look forward to working with you to tell the truth about the make-believe mayor and contribute to his inevitable defeat again this year.

    Dear Kammy,

    You're right.

I did see Joe Solomon purchase some raffle tickets, something I have NEVER seen former Mayor Avedisian do and I complemented him on it. You're right. I should have given him credit for that.

Rick, this wasn't you conveniently leaving out part of the story. YOU presented it as FACT. You stated "(you) were there to donate money, councilman Solomon was there to get his picture taken."

Now just like many other lies and fraudelent tales spewed by Rick Corrente he acknowledges that YES INDEED Councilman Solomon DID in fact by raffle tickets while at the event. Seriously folks! There isn't a depth too low for Rick Corrente to sink his failing campaign. He actually tried to accuse his opponent of something HE KNEW WASN'T TRUE. If this is the type of mudslinging, dirt bag campaign you're going to run, Rick then maybe you should drop out now. The city of Warwick is too good for some lying, tax delinquent who thinks he can lie his way into office.

Nice try assaulting the character of Mr. Solomon. A man who you never had a problem with until he declared hinself a candidate for mayor. You are exactly what is wrong with politics today Rick. If you could turn on someone who you've done nothing but praise in the past, I wouldn't want to see how you'd treat your enemies in an election.

No response to any of my comments Rick?

You don't want to comment on "The Taxpayers City Council" as you referred to them a few months ago, or "the hardest working city council Warwick has ever had" (as you've referred to them several times in the past).

Scal, the only thing the make-believe mayor succeeds at doing is humiliating himself even more with every comment.

His "something I have never seen Mayor Avedisian do" comment perfectly sums up the glaring defects in his character:

First, that he thinks his lack of seeing something means it didn't happen [there are too many other examples to include here]; second, that he still thinks he is campaigning against Mayor Avedisian, who starts his job at RIPTA next week; third, as you right point out, he only grudgingly confirmed Mr. Solomon's contributions after being called out for his earlier false statement; and fourth, that he still thinks, despite how often he has been exposed as a liar, that anyone believes a word he says about anything that happens in the city.

As you rightly point out, Warwick voters will not support someone who so blatantly tries to fool them. It shows a real lack of shame on the make-believe mayor's part that, instead of correcting his own behavior, he blindly attacks others -- including those who he previously praised.

I look forward to joining you and thousands of honest, taxpaying Warwick voters who will reject the hopeless candidacy of the make-believe mayor at the first opportunity.
