Thomas C. McKeown
Thomas C. McKeown, passed away October 17, 2012. His dear wife, “Fern”, Charlotte Fern (Botkin) McKeown, formerly of Marietta, Illonois, preceded him in death. They had been married 60 years when she died in February, 2004.
Born May 27,1923, in Waltham, Massachesetts, son of Thomas F. and Mary R. McKeown, he attended elementary and high schools there and in New York. Later, at age 54, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Upper Iowa University. He served with the Army for 4 years during World War II, where he became a journeyman Cartographer. Following the war, he became an employee of the federal government as a Professional Cartographer and, later, as a Military Intelligence Research Specialist. As an employee of the Army Map Service (subsequently renamed the Defense mapping Agency [DMA] and now known as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) he served in Washington, D.C. for 5 years, then served as Chief of Operations & Deputy Director of the Providence, R.I., Field Office for 26 years, then Director for 3 years. During that time Tom was an active member of the Society of American Military Engineers, the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, and was co-founder and Charter Member of the Earth Sciences Technologies Association. He served as President of the Association for 2 years, 1969 & 1970. Five years after he retired in 1979, he and his wife, Fern, moved to Vacaville, California. In his retirement Tom taught adult education (Math & English primarily) for 3 years, served on a suicide prevention hotline for 7 years, and initiated an Alzheimer Saturday Respite Program and served as a volunteer caregiver in the Program, called "In Good Hands." He and his wife, Fern, served the program for 12 years from 1987 to 1999. From about 1985 until 2003 (for Fern) and 2007 for Tom, each volunteered as "actor/patients" to assist their daughter, Charlotte, at Solano Community College in teaching and qualifying EMT students. Tom has also been a member of the Army Mapping Seniors (AMS) and of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) since 1984. With NARFE he has served in various Officer positions in the Cecil LaMar Chapter #903 and has been President of the Chapter since 1985. Tom was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
A loving father, he is survived by two daughters, Charlotte M. McKeown, and Rosemary C. McKeown. Tom had one sibling, a younger sister, Marie Julie, (McKeown) Valle who lives in Weston, Massachusetts.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas C. McKeown of Vacaville will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 25th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Vacaville. The Rev. Father Vincent O'Reilly will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery in Dixon. A visitation will be held Wednesday evening, October 24th, from 5-8:00 P.M. with Rosary at 7:00 P.M. at Vaca Hills Chapel.
