Titans rally past Wizards in season finale

Junior Brianna DeRobbio wasn’t supposed to play the front line on Thursday night, but she stepped up and filled the position admirably.

With Meghan Murray out, DeRobbio served as an anchor against some strong West Warwick hitting, leading the Titans to a four-set, comeback win in their regular season finale.

“Brianna DeRobbio stepped up today,” Toll Gate head coach Jean McGarry said. “Her game was on fire, and I told her that after Game 3.”

The Wizards took the first set decisively, 25-15, before jumping out to a 12-4 lead in the second set. Toll Gate surged back to win that, 26-24, to seize momentum and win the third and fourth sets, 25-17 and 25-22, respectively.

The two sides were tied at 12 in the first set after neither could find much of a rhythm. The Wizards got in synch first, ripping off eight straight points behind Toll Gate miscues and efficient serving from senior Jordin Laporte.

West Warwick led 20-12, and the Titans never recovered. The Wizards took the first set, and that performance carried over into the second.

Once again, with the score tied 3-3 this time, West Warwick ripped off six in a row to take an early 9-3 advantage. It would also hold leads of 12-4 and 15-7 before the Titans patched together a run of their own.

“What changed in the second set was we had to minimize our errors,” McGarry said. “The first set was horrible in the sense that we gave up points. If you play against a team that is pretty much your equal and you give up points, you’re going to lose. From there, we wanted to improve on our serving. Just get rid of the unforced errors.”

Katelyn Stamps delivered an important kill during the ensuing 7-1 assault, but West Warwick was its own worst enemy. The Wizards gave Toll Gate six free points during that span, making it a 16-14 game.

The Titans would bend, but not break, down the stretch. The Wizards jumped out to a 21-17 lead, but would again be their own undoing. Laporte’s cross-court kill made it 23-20, putting a win within sight, but a service error gave Toll Gate new life.

Samantha Petrarca put the Titans’ backs against the wall with a point to make it 24-22, but a Jordan Rajotte shot out of bounds and a Katelyn Stamps kill knotted the score at 24.

The Titans would take their first lead since early in the set after a West Warwick return attempt couldn’t clear the net, and DeRobbio finished the Wizards off with a deceiving tip. Suddenly, momentum shifted to Toll Gate and the rumbling gymnasium was silenced.

West Warwick would hold a slim, early advantage in the third set, and later tie the score at 10, but Toll Gate dominated for the most part. The Wizards trailed 13-12 midway through before some work from Katelyn Stamps and Jillian Higgins helped secure five consecutive points for the Titans.

The Wizards made too many mistakes late in the third set, allowing Toll Gate to extend the cushion to 21-15. The Titans were opportunistic, and closed out the home team with back-to-back kills off the hands of Christa Fitzsimmons and DeRobbio.

It looked as though Toll Gate would make quick work of the Wizards in the fourth set, jumping out to a 13-8 lead behind DeRobbio’s effort up front.

West Warwick then made its own bid to shift the pendulum back its way. It slowly worked into the deficit, cutting it to just three, 21-18, late in the set. The Wizards would earn three of the next four points, tying the score at 22 and forcing McGarry to call timeout.

The Titans locked in from there, and West Warwick wouldn’t change its side of the scoreboard again. The Wizards failed to return two crucial volleys, allowing Toll Gate to escape with a 25-22 fourth-set victory to spoil senior night.

“We prepared for the energy in this gym,” McGarry said. “We knew that is was senior night, and I’m very familiar with the West Warwick crowd and they really do get into their team sports. I told them that they really needed to stay focused. They worked really hard at doing that. I think Game 5 could’ve been a very different story.”

Toll Gate clinched the No. 3 seed in Division II-South, drawing Scituate in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Spartans posted a 10-4 record in Division II-North to earn the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game.
