Touro Fraternal Association celebrating its centennial

Touro Fraternal Association, the largest independent Jewish fraternal order in New England, has commenced the celebration of its centennial year.

Founded by the Honorable Jacob A. Eaton, Rhode Island’s first Jewish member of the General Assembly, Touro was granted its charter by the state legislature in 1917 and organized a year later. The association has since offered its members a sense of fraternalism, community and belonging. Touro has a tradition of philanthropy, assisting many Jewish and other charitable causes, both inside and out of Rhode Island. With headquarters at 45 Rolfe Square in Cranston, Touro boasts more than 500 members.

The centennial year will be marked with special events for its members, highlighted by a gala weekend celebration on September 16 and 17, and a focus on significant charitable works. Touro will be sponsoring Oneg Shabbats at synagogues throughout the state on the same weekend to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

A Centennial Committee has been planning many additional activities over the next year, including the collection of material to be included in a time capsule to be opened at the 150th celebration in 2067.
