Recent Hendricken graduate and four-time All-Stater Joey Tucker stole the show at the 112th Rhode Island Golf Association Amateur Championship at Valley Country Club in Warwick on Tuesday.

Tucker birdied his final four holes on Day 2 of the championship to shoot the low round of the day (3-under 69) and earn medalist honors with a two-day score of 5-under-par 139, holding off Warwick resident and former Toll Gate standout Tyler Cooke by one stroke.

Tucker got off to a solid start on Day 1 on Monday, carding 2-under-par to sit two shots off the lead. That round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 third, as Tucker holed out with a wedge from 78 yards.

He got off to a good start on the front nine on Day 2, pushing his total score out to 5-under-par with three birdies and six pars through nine holes. Tucker would bogey four of his first five holes on the back nine, before carding birdies on 15, 16, 17 and 18 to move atop the leaderboard.

With his two-day performance, Tucker earned the top seed for the 32-player match play tournament that began on Wednesday morning. He came back from an early deficit to down Jay Barrow of Laurel Lane Country Club in the round of 32 to move on to the round of 16 on Wednesday afternoon.

Tucker’s Hendricken teammates Colin Sutyla and Sean Irons also advanced to match play on Wednesday, with Sutyla moving on to the round of 16, while Irons was ousted in the round of 32.

Cooke and another former Toll Gate standout, Brad Valois, who tied for fifth place after two days of stroke play, were edged in the first round of match play.

Results from the round of 16 matches were unavailable at press time.

Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are set for today at Valley Country Club, and the title match is slated for Friday morning.
