United Way announces Book Are Wings drive

The United Way of Rhode Island and Books Are Wings recently announced their sixth annual book drive, taking place April 24 through June 2. The organizations are seeking donations of new and gently used books to ensure local children have the tools needed to experience the joy of reading.

During last year’s book drive, 40,000 books were collected, books that are now in the homes of children across Rhode Island. Learning to read is the most important predictor of a child’s academic success; yet, too many children struggle to meet this crucial milestone. According to statistics provided by the organizations, 30 percent of fourth graders in Rhode Island read below grade level and 42 percent of fourth graders from low-income families score below proficient.

Children receive the donated books through Books Are Wings, The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative and after-school learning programs. Books may be dropped off on Fridays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., April 28 through June 2, at Books Are Wings, located in Hope Artiste Village, 1005 Main St., Suite 8223A, Pawtucket, or at United Way of Rhode Island’s headquarters, 50 Valley Street, Providence.
