Vets girls roll to 11-0

The Warwick Vets girls basketball team has been arguably the top team in the state this season at the middle school level, boasting a 11-0 record and recently topping cross town rival Winman 64-3.

Amelia Polichetti led the Hurricanes with 15 points in the victory over Winman, followed by Armani Rivera, Henry and Sloane Falcofsky with nine and Garcia with eight.

Vets had six different girls score on three-pointers in the win, which has been key for the team’s offense throughout the entire season.

“We shoot very well, all five of our starters can shoot. We moved the ball well today, played well on defense, we’ve been working well together as a team, they’re learning all the plays, the basketball IQ is there,” said Vets coach Rich Hough after the win.

The Hurricanes also feature a deep, talented roster that is largely made up of experienced eighth graders.

“We run about nine, 10 girls deep. Our bench is almost as good as our top five, and I feel like we may have the top two players in the state. We’ve got 10 eighth graders, during tryouts I told them, it’s like how it was in softball, that this is our year to do it. We have the talent, we have the defensive and offensive skill, everything we need is there, we just need to put it together, and so far it has worked,” said Hough.

The Hurricanes went on to beat Birchwood 68-18 on Tuesday, and have three games remaining on the schedule.

The eighth graders are hungry to finish the season undefeated and to take home a championship during their final campaign before high school.

“We’ve got four games remaining and I feel like we should be able to handle all of them. That’s on them now, they want to be undefeated, they wanted to be 10-0, they wanted to beat their cross-town rival, they wanted to win their division, now we’ll see what happens from here. When we play our game, I really believe that we can beat anybody,” said Hough.

Remaining focused on the task at hand will be key moving forward, and not looking to far ahead into the future, according to Hough.

“I think we can go undefeated, I think we’ll be there in the end. Semifinals, finals, I believe we will be there, but it’s now going to be about getting there and being mentally prepared for that which is not always the easiest thing,” said Hough. “I tell the girls the same thing every year, the season is like a ladder. The most important game is the next one, and after each win you take one step up the ladder until you reach the top.”
