Cole tops Vets, 60-46

The Vets girls basketball team dropped its season opener to visiting Cole 60-46 last week.

After falling behind 33-15 at the halftime break, the Hurricanes would battle back in the second half and outscore Cole 31-27. However, Cole was able to hold on down the stretch to capture the win.

“We’ve looked good so far. Cole is a good team, they’ve got some bigs. We battled back in the second half, I thought that we did much better in the second half than we did in the first half. They knew what they had to do but they were nervous, it’s the first game, we’ve got a lot of young players,” said Vets coach Rich Hough. “We did OK, we did what we had to do but (in the first half) we were hitting shots that just weren’t going in.”

Hough felt that his club played with more energy in the second half, and also made the most of switching its formation.

“We had our spread going (in the first half) but we changed it up to an X play. Corners, everyone passes and cuts, the top stays there. It seemed to work in the second half because we were getting more shots and we were driving the ball which was good because we wanted to get to the free throw line as well,” said Hough. “If the first half was like the second half then it would have been a different ball game … our kids came out a little nervous, Cole is a good team that we hope to see again.”

The Hurricanes field a young team this season, made up mostly of seventh graders. Hough is looking for the girls to find their comfort zone, and get better each game.

“It’s about trying to keep it balanced, keeping the same thing over and over again. Not throwing anything fresh at them right away, we started with the spread but jumped to the X and they got it and it was working, I’m trying to do stuff that they know and are comfortable doing,” said Hough. “They’re getting it, we’re trying to keep that continuity. We’ll figure it out.”

Armani Rivera and Amelia Polichetti led Vets with 16 points each while Carmyn Acarregui added 10.

Vets falls to 0-1 on the season, and will take on Narragansett and Curtis Corner this week.
