The Warwick Vets Hurricanes trounced the West Warwick Wizards, 13-3, in five innings on Thursday evening.
Kayla Morin led the way, pitching all five innings for Warwick while compiling three RBIs.
“She did a great job in the circle today,” Warwick head coach Paul Kennedy said. “She mixed up her pitches. Kayla deserves the game ball today.”
Morin, Natasha Savage and Michelle Spremulli all hit home runs for Vets.
Caitlin Gamelin pitched the first three innings for West Warwick.
Alexis Carpenter and Marina Morgera got on base in the top of the first for West Warwick. However, Morin got Madisen Saballa-Reese to hit into a triple play and Warwick escaped the inning unscathed.
Morin then took over on the offensive end. She led with a home run to give Warwick an early 1-0 lead. Vets went off for a total of six runs in the opening frame. Destinee Charette struck last, hitting an RBI triple. The other four runs batted in came from Alexis LeBelle, Arietta Chevian, Mackenzie Hough and Savage.
In the top of the fifth, down eight, West Warwick got going a little bit. With Morin still pitching for Vets, Alexis Carpenter got a hit. With two runners on, Morgera hit an RBI single to put West Warwick on the board at 8-1. Next, it would inch closer when Reese hit a sacrifice fly to make it 8-2. Then, Gamelin ripped an RBI single to trim Vets’ lead to 8-3.
Vets wouldn’t let things get out of hand.
In the bottom of the fifth, LeBelle earned an early walk. Savage then hit a home run to center field to score LeBelle and increase the Hurricanes’ lead to 10-3. They went back-to-back when Spremulli hit a rocket to center next for a home run to put Vets up 11-3.
With runners at first and second, Emily Walason hit a single into center field to load the bases. With two outs, Morin came through again with a hit to center that scored Link and Chevian for the 13-3 win via the 10-run rule.
