The Warwick Vets softball team’s season came to an end on Friday after a 15-0, five-inning loss in the losers’ bracket final to eventual state runner-up Moses Brown.
The ’Canes didn’t help themselves, making a total of nine errors to give the Quakers’ offense unnecessary help.
“When I look up there and see that big number in the error column, that’s not us,” Vets manager Paul Kennedy said. “We got down early on the scoreboard, we got down early on ourselves. That’s something that you can’t let happen in a do-or-die game. We played a bad game at the worst time.”
The Quakers broke the game open in the second inning, pushing across eight runs on six hits to take a commanding 11-0 lead.
Lauren Bamonte started the second with a walk, and she would score a few pitches later on Alexis Sangermano’s triple to right center field. The Quakers rattled off three consecutive singles after that, broken up by a walk, before a 2-RBI base hit from Elizabeth Calabresi.
Sabrina Liston’s triple later in the frame brought across another two runs. She would score on an error at shortstop to put Moses Brown ahead 11-0.
Sophomore pitcher Janel Gamache handled the ’Canes in the circle. She allowed just one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Despite the defeat, the ’Canes posted a 14-2 regular season record, won the Southern subdivision and finished as one of the top three teams in Division II in their last year.
“It was a tremendous season,” Kennedy said. “This one does leave a bad taste in your mouth, but when you look at the totality of the season, it was a very successful last season.”
