Vets shuts out Bain, 12-0

The Warwick Vets Hurricanes blanked the Hugh B. Bain Middle School Knights 12-0 on Monday afternoon in fastpitch softball.

And that shutout came while Warwick was exhausted following a very active excursion.

“It’s a great win,” Vets manager Rich Hough said. “These girls had a busy weekend. They had tournaments in New Jersey and all over the place. So, they came back late last night. They were really tired, but they went out there and they performed.”

Both Bain’s Taylor Simoneau and Warwick’s Alyssa Twomey threw complete games.

Twomey struck out 17 for Vets and gave up just one hit with three walks.

“She pitched great,” Hough said. “I gave her the ball and I said ‘it’s your game.’ We don’t know what’s going to happen the rest of the week with the rain. So, I said, ‘this is yours.’ Usually we pitch, one pitcher three innings, then another pitcher three innings, and vice-versa, but I told my other pitcher (Sophia Chevian), just relax. I said, its Alyssa’s ball today. So, she took it and she went the distance with it.”

Simoneau fanned eight for Bain.

Warwick’s Adrianna Pettinato, a sixth grader, who the team nicknamed “rookie”, led the Hurricanes offense with two hits and two RBI.

“She had a great game,” Hough said. “She played third base and she played left field. She surprised me.”

“And so did Alyssa,” Hough added. “She threw the whole game. She threw hard, she threw strikes. She didn’t get slower at all. In fact, I think she got faster as the game went on.”

Warwick got on the board with two outs in the top of the first when Twomey socked a shot down the first baseline, which rolled by the right fielder, and allowed the hitter to come all the way around to score, putting Vets up 1-0.

Then, in the second inning, Vets tacked on three more runs.

With two outs and runners at second and third, Gillian Brown rocketed a routine fly ball to left field, which was dropped by the left fielder, and that allowed both Jenna Lucia and Gianna Paolino to come home, while extending the Warwick advantage to 3-0.

Next, Genna D’Amato belted an RBI single through the middle and scored Brown, which increased the Hurricanes cushion to 4-0.

After three scoreless frames, Vets added on five more runs in the sixth.

First, D’Amato ripped an RBI double to center and drove in Alayna Medina, which put the Hurricanes up 5-0.

Next, Chevian smacked a two-run triple to left field, which scored D’Amato and Brown, while upping the Warwick lead to 7-0.

Then, Jenna Alteri, the third baseman, socked an RBI single to shallow center, which scored Chevian and ballooned the Vets advantage to 8-0.

After that, Pettinato blasted a liner to right, which went in and out of the glove of the right fielder, and allowed Alteri to score from second, putting Vets on top 9-0.

Warwick capped the afternoon with three more runs in the seventh.

The first came when D’Amato belted an RBI single to left, which scored Medina, making it 10-0.

Then, Twomey drove in D’Amato with a base hit, and that extended the Vets cushion to 11-0.

Lastly, Chevian chopped a ground ball to the second baseman, which was overthrown on the relay to first, and that allowed Twomey to score, upping the Warwick buffer to 12-0.

Bain’s lone hit came when Ziladi Natareno hit a single in the second inning.

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 5-0. Vets faced off against De La Salle on Wednesday, but the score was unavailable at press time. Warwick plays next at Western Hills on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
