The Warwick Vets boys soccer team has been one of the best middle school teams in the state this regular season, jumping out to an 8-1 record and winning its games by a combined score of 50-4. The Hurricanes have been dominant on each end of the field, securing five shutouts in the process.
“This is a solid team. Obviously there is some good soccer in Warwick, the youth programs are strong, a lot of these players have been playing together for a number of years on different teams. We have a lot of eighth graders that are solid, we have a lot of seventh graders are influential players. It’s a very well-rounded team,” said Vets coach Lisa Flanders, who is currently in her first year at the helm.
After a summer of uncertainly regarding sports in the city, Flanders was happy to get the opportunity to lead the Hurricanes and guide them back to the postseason.
“I inherited a good group. When the (job posting) was up I was waiting to see a coach be appointed. My husband (Pilgrim girls soccer coach Tom Flanders) and I had been fighting for sports all summer at city hall, we were front and center and we didn’t want to see this team go by the wayside so I stepped up,” said Flanders.
Flanders has been impressed with her team’s attention to detail and has appreciated the strong leadership from its eighth grade captains.
“They are good listeners and they do whatever we need them to do, it has been fun watching them. They are great kids, our three captains Tommy Flanders, Ryan Garvey and Josh Escamilla do a great job of leading this team, it’s been great,” said Flanders. “It’s truly a team effort, but our back four is solid. Our keeper hasn’t had too much action but has played well when he has. Everyone has played well, they’re communicating well, they’re a true team.”
