Walter Gordon Allen, 95, a farmer who conducted many farming activities in Kent County for over 60 years as an employee of Joseph and Ruth Allen, died of complications related to heart failure on October 9, 2017.

Mr. Allen was born in Warwick (Apponaug) on October 19, 1921, at the family farm at 409 Tollgate Rd, and lived there for many years. He grew up on the family farm in Warwick and attended the Hardig Grammar School. He was affectionately known in the community by family and friends by his nickname “Toot”. Mr. Allen’s farming experiences included dairy cattle, poultry, potatoes, sweet corn, strawberries and firewood. He was primarily known for the care of the dairy cattle at the Tollgate Farm where he was seen often with the cows and showed them to many children and their parents. Allen’s farm was widely known especially during WW II when food was scarce. During and after this war, the dairy herd was increased to 35 milking cows and Mr. Allen participated in the care of these dairy animals including the production of milk. This was a major effort because these cattle were milked by hand.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Grace Ross of Farmington Hill, MI, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William Taylor Allen, Joseph Frank Allen, Jr., George Weeden Allen, Lucy Elise Whitford, Avis Alida Redmond, Marion Isabel Greco, and Harriet Alberta Schmucker.
