DUI

On March 2 at approximately 10:40 p.m., Officer Jacob T. Elderkin reports being on patrol on Post Road heading northbound into Apponaug when he observed a vehicle traveling south at 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. Elderkin reports he was using a traffic unit vehicle with moving radar capability.

Elderkin changed directions and initiated a traffic stop in front of the Brookside Village Apartments at 3687 Post Road. The officer reports detecting a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the breath of the vehicle’s male operator. The operator is also said to have had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech.

The man is said to have consented to field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed. The man is said to have told the officer that bad balance due to his age led to the poor results on the field sobriety testing. The officer then provided the man with an opportunity to take a portable breath test, which he accepted. The test reportedly found his blood alcohol content to be significantly above the legal limit.

Daniel F. Paquette, 69, of 30 Lighthouse Lane, Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. There, he reportedly refused to consent to a chemical breath test.

Paquette was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for speeding and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Officer Michael T. Isherwood reports traveling west on Airport Road in a marked cruiser just after 1 a.m. on March 3 when he observed a dark colored Hyundai Elantra traveling east at a high rate of speed.

Isherwood followed the vehicle as it continued to the Warwick Avenue intersection, where it reportedly made a right turn without making a complete stop and without using a traffic signal despite the traffic signal displaying red. While traveling on Warwick Avenue, the officer reports that the vehicle twice crossed the double-yellow lines and once crossed the lane dividing line.

A traffic stop was initiated on Royland Road. The operator is said to have told Isherwood that he was traveling home from Cranston. The officer reports detecting a “strong odor” of alcohol emanating from the man’s breath, and further states that the man had “extremely watery and bloodshot” eyes and slurred speech.

The operator reportedly acknowledged having consumed alcoholic beverages earlier that night. He is said to have consented to field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Nicholas R. Marro, 21, of 165 Lewiston St., Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. He is said to have consented to a chemical breath test, which reportedly found his blood alcohol content to be significantly above the legal limit.

Marro was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for speeding, failure to obey traffic control devices, failure to use a turn signal and laned roadway violations.

LARCENY

On Feb. 22 at approximately 4 p.m., Officer Cody Wild responded to National Grid’s substation at 700 Cowesett Road for a report of a larceny.

At the scene, the facility’s operations manager told Wild that a worker had been sent to investigate an equipment issue with a transformer at approximately 1:30 p.m. that day. The worker found that ground wires had been cut and approximately 200 feet of copper wire was missing. A subsequent security check of the property found that the substation’s main walk-in gate, which had been secured with a chain, had been tampered with. It was believed the unauthorized entry occurred on Feb. 15.

The operations manager told Wild this was not the first instance of unauthorized entry.

SHOPLIFTING

On March 5 at approximately 3:41 p.m., Officer Anthony J. D’Abrosca responded to the LensCrafters location at the Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, regarding a previous incident of shoplifting.

At the scene, the reporting party told D’Abrosca that shortly before 3 p.m. on Feb. 28, a male subject entered the LensCrafters location and “pretended to look at items in the store.” The man then began browsing at the luxury wall, the reporting party said, before taking nine pairs of glasses – valued at a combined $2,415 – and placing them into a bag. The man left the store before security could respond.

LensCrafters indicated it wishes to press charges if a suspect is identified. Video surveillance from the store was placed into evidence.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on March 5, Officer Timothy J. Tavares responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, for a report of shoplifting.

While en route, dispatch advised that another officer at the scene had apprehended the suspect, described as a white male with facial tattoos.

The reporting party, a loss prevention associate at Macy’s, told Tavares that the suspect had been observed concealing clothing items in his pants and attempting to pass all points of purchase. When confronted, the suspect is said to have become aggressive and fled on foot. The stolen items – a sweatshirt and sweatpants – had a combined value of $196, according to Macy’s.

Store personnel also recognized the suspect as having been involved in a shoplifting incident the previous day, according to the officer’s report.

The suspect is said to have initially provided police with a false name. Subsequent investigation, including a review of records from Middletown Police, led to the suspect being correctly identified.

Kiefer Woods, 27, of 86 Norman Drive, Portsmouth, was arrested and charged with shoplifting and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty.
