Police Log - 04/30/19

DUI

Just after 11 p.m. on April 14, Officer Ali M. Jaafar responded to Aububon Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Dispatch indicated a vehicle had crashed into a parked vehicle.

At the scene, Jaafar made contact with the operator of the first vehicle, which appeared to have left its lane of travel and crashed into the parked vehicle on the opposite side of the road. The officer states that the operator’s eyes were “severely bloodshot” and his “speech was very slurred.” He also detected an “extremely strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the operator’s breath.

The operator received medical clearance from fire and rescue personnel. He reportedly acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier in the evening and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he is said to have failed.

Kyle J. Maloney, 28, 400 Narragansett Parkway, Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters. He is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Maloney was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and leaving the lane of travel. He was later released into the custody of a sober adult.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 15, Officer Christopher J. Gillis responded to Namquid Drive for a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Dispatch indicated one vehicle had struck a parked vehicle.

At the scene, Gillis observed a black Nissan Sentra stopped diagonally on the street after striking an unoccupied Volvo station wagon. The Sentra was occupied by a female operator and a male passenger, according to Gillis, and the operator was laying across the center console with her head on the passenger’s lap. The operator was breathing but unresponsive, the officer reports, and did not have any visible injuries.

Fire and rescue personnel arrived on scene and began treating the operator, who “regained consciousness and suddenly became very combative,” according to Gillis. The officer assisted in restraining the operator, handcuffing her to a stretcher before she was loaded into the back of an ambulance.

Gillis detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the operator during this process and requested she submit to field sobriety testing, which she reportedly refused. The officer additionally states that the operator’s speech was slurred and that her eyes were “bloodshot and watery.”

Gillis accompanied the operator to Kent Hospital and advised she had been placed under arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. The operator is said to have refused to respond when asked to submit to a chemical breath test.

Lidia C. Rocha, 52, 225 Atlantic Ave., Warwick, was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and leaving the lane of travel. She was left in the care of hospital staff.

BREAK-IN

At approximately 7:40 a.m. on April 16, Officer Russell Brown responded to Monroe Muffler and Brake at 1640 Post Road for a report of a possible break-in.

At the scene, the reporting party told Brown he had locked and secured the building at approximately 7 p.m. the previous night. Just before 7:30 a.m. that morning, he returned to work and discovered a window to the second bay door had been broken. The cash register drawer was also broken and left on the counter, and approximately $100 in cash and change was missing. No video surveillance was available. The matter was forwarded to detectives.

DISORDERLY

At approximately 6:14 p.m. on April 13, Officer Michael C. Bailey responded to the food court at Warwick Mall to assist Officer Steven Moretti, who was working a detail. Moretti reported a male subject was acting disorderly.

According to Moretti the subject had caused a disturbance at the Buffalo Wild Wings and was asked to leave the establishment. The officer reports that the subject appeared visibly intoxicated and became aggressive, “yelling and causing a disturbance in a public area, [and] obstructing the normal flow of traffic and business in the area.”

Moretti states that the subject then “began to make a flexing motion with his arms and clenching his firsts, took a fighting stance and began walking towards me.” At that point, he was taken into custody. The subject allegedly pushed Moretti in the chest while being placed in handcuffs.

John R. Dias, 27, 154 Tingley St., Apt. A, West Warwick, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conducted and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released into the custody of a sober adult with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

LARCENY

At approximately 1:17 a.m. on April 13, Officer Derek J. Hagopian responded to Dave’s Bar & Grill at 2339 Post Road for a report of tires and rims being stolen from a motor vehicle. Dispatch indicated the vehicle’s passenger-side front window had also been smashed.

At the scene, Hagopian made contact with the operator, who indicated he had arrived at the establishment to meet friends at approximately 10:15 p.m. that night. The officer observed that the vehicle, a 2016 Honda Accord, was missing all four tires and rims and was propped up slightly on the passenger side by a piece of pavement taken from the ground.

The operator indicated nothing of value was missing from the interior of the vehicle, although it appeared whoever was responsible for the larceny had gone through the vehicle in order to find the wheel lock kept in the glove box. The value of the stolen tires and rims was valued at approximately $1,500, and the broken window was valued at roughly $100.

No security camera footage from the nearby businesses was available, although the operator provided dashboard camera video from his vehicle that may have captured the suspect or suspects. The matter was forwarded to detectives.

On April 20 at approximately 11:47 a.m., Officer Jeremy T. Smith responded to Karl’s East Coast Speed at 3145 Post Road for a report of a catalytic converter being stolen from a motor home.

At the scene, Smith made contact with the owner of the business, who indicated the motor home had been parked at the location for the winter. On the night of April 19, he noticed the vehicle was running very loud and subsequently found its catalytic converter was missing.

No surveillance video was available, according to Smith. The matter was forwarded to detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

Just after 5:33 p.m. on March 23, Officer Anthony J. D’Abrosca responded to the Target location at the Warwick Mall for a reporting of a shoplifting incident in progress. The suspect, a woman, had left the scene prior to the arrival of officers and could not be located. She was reportedly seen entering a red Honda Accord with Massachusetts registration.

A loss prevention associate at the store told police she observed the woman conceal multiple items from the store in her purse before exiting without making any attempt to pay. In all, 22 items were stolen with a combined value of nearly $313, according to Target. The store wished to press charges, and the matter was forwarded to detectives.

On April 16 at approximately 4:15 p.m., Officer Ben L. Bratko and other officers responded to the Kent County Courthouse for a warrant pickup.

Tracy Ann Souza, 33, 154 Narragansett Ave., Apt. 2, Cranston, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.

At approximately 10 a.m. on April 10, Officer Nicholas J. DiNardo responded to the Dick’s Sporting Goods location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of an earlier shoplifting incident.

At the scene, DiNardo made contact with the store’s manager, who indicated staff discovered a pair of putters missing from the golf department on April 9. A review of security camera footage revealed a middle-aged man enter the store on the morning of April 9 and conceal one of the putters in his pant leg before exiting without any attempt to pay. The putter was valued at approximately $400 and the store wishes to press charges.

The second missing putter remained unaccounted for. The matter was forwarded to detectives.
