Police Log - 05/09/19

LARCENY

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on April 25, Officer Jordan P. Guyton responded to New England Landscape Lighting at 319 Bald Hill Road for a report of a larceny. At the scene, the reporting party indicated the catalytic converters had been stolen from two of the company’s box trucks. Guyton observed that the converters – valued at approximately $300 each – were missing from the vehicles. Surveillance video was requested through the business’ security company, and the matter was forwarded to detectives.

Just before 9 a.m. on April 30, Officer Aaron C. Kay responded to Kapsch TrafficCom at 83 Gilbane St. for a report of damage to one of the business’ vehicles.

At the scene, the manager indicated that the catalytic converter had been removed from one of the business’ bucket trucks. Kay observed the damage to the vehicle, which the manager indicated had last been seen fully intact at approximately 4:30 p.m. on April 26.

Surveillance video from outside the business was requested.

Shortly after 12 p.m. on April 30, Officer Aaron C. Kay responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters for a report of a stolen wallet. The reporting party told Kay that after shopping at the Walmart on Bald Hill Road the previous evening, she inadvertently left her wallet in a shopping cart. She realized the wallet was missing during the drive home and returned to the Walmart, but was unable to locate it after searching several carts and speaking with the store’s management. The reporting party said the wallet contained approximately $350 in cash, a Rhode Island driver’s license, several credit cards and blank personal checks, her birth certificate and her Social Security card. No additional information was available.

At approximately 7:13 a.m. on April 30, Officer Daniel J. O’Connell responded to a Roosevelt Road residence for a report of a larceny from a motor vehicle. At the scene, the owner of the vehicle indicated he had parked his vehicle in the driveway at approximately 6 p.m. the previous evening. As he prepared to leave for work that morning, it appeared the vehicle had been entered and that approximately $5 in change was missing. There were no suspects.

On May 2 at approximately 12:40 a.m., Officer Frank J. Montanaro responded to the NYLO hotel at 400 Knight St. for a report of wheels and tires being stolen from a motor vehicle.

At the scene, Montanaro made contact with the reporting party and observed the vehicle, a 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec with Pennsylvania registration. The officer observed that the vehicle was missing all four tires and wheels and had been dropped on bricks, which caused damaged to the front-door frames.

The reporting party indicated he had last driven the vehicle at approximately 8:30 p.m. on May 1 and returned to find the wheels and tires missing at approximately 10:15 p.m. that night.

Surveillance video was requested from the hotel, and the matter was forwarded to detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly before 9 p.m. on April 22, Officer Maxwell A. Neiley and other officers responded to the Macy’s location at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. During the response, dispatch advised that the store’s loss prevention had two women in custody.

At the scene, Neiley and the other officers made contact with a loss prevention officer. The loss prevention officer indicated she had observed the two women enter the store, one carrying a large handbag that appeared virtually empty. She said the women selected multiple items and entered fitting rooms on two occasions. They then passed all points of purchase and exited the store.

The women were then detained by loss prevention and mall security outside the store, at which point six items – Tommy Hilfiger logo tape, two one-piece swimsuits, one Tommy Hilfiger bikini top, one Tommy Hilfiger one-piece swimsuit and one Jessica Simpson one-piece swimsuit – with a total value of $441 were recovered. Five of the items were in the handbag, and one of the women was wearing one of the swimsuits.

Iris Vargas, 24, 30 John St., Cranston, and Ariana Ortiz, 18, 241 Admiral St., Apt. 1, Providence, were both arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. Each was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on April 28, Officer Sara L. Goes responded to the JCPenney location at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident. While en route, dispatch advised that loss prevention at the store had a woman in custody.

At the scene, Goes spoke with a loss prevention officer at the store, who indicated she observed the woman enter the store and begin acting suspiciously at approximately 3:15 p.m. The woman is said to have selected two Sephora makeup items and concealed them in her purse before passing all points of sale and exiting the store. At that point, she was confronted by loss prevention. The stolen items, with a combined value of $161.57, were recovered.

Virginia A. Allen, 31, 79 Duke St., Apt. 8, East Greenwich, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. on May 3, Officer Brian J. Holleran responded to the Kohl’s location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Dispatch advised that the female suspect had been located inside the nearby Wendy’s location by the store’s loss prevention personnel.

Holleran responded to the Wendy’s and found the suspect had entered the restaurant’s restroom. She exited the restroom at Holleran’s request and was identified by loss prevention as the suspect, at which point she was detained and the officer responded to the Kohl’s.

According to Holleran, surveillance video from the store showed the suspect selecting items from the women’s and jewelry sections. The video reportedly showed the woman twice entering a fitting room and emerging without any items. She then exited the store, passing all points of purchase, and was confronted by loss prevention before fleeing.

The stolen items are said to have had a combined value of $342.33.

Rouba Khouri, 32, 80 Victoria Ave., Cranston, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

On May 3 at approximately 1:48 a.m., Officer Tyler J. Mobrice was traveling south on Warwick Avenue when he observed a green Honda Ridgeline bearing Massachusetts registration traveling north.

The vehicle is said to have crossed the double-yellow line with its high beams on, and Mobrice initiated a motor vehicle stop near the Woburn Avenue intersection.

A records check revealed the operator’s license was suspended and that he had two prior convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Christian A. Garcia, 31, 137 3rd St., Apt. K, Newport, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was also cited for a laned roadway violation. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
