FARE EVASION

On May 12 at 12:21 a.m., Officer Damian J. Andrews responded to the Wendy’s location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of evasion of payment for services from a taxi.

At the scene, Andrews made contact with the taxi driver, who indicated he had driven two men from Providence to the Wendy’s. The men then exited the taxi and refused to pay the $30.50 fare, according to the driver.

Andrews then spoke with one of the men, who initially said he had no cash and had believed he could pay for the ride with a credit card. The officer advised the man there was a bank around the corner and escorted the taxi to that location, where the man is said to have refused to obtain cash to pay for the ride.

Kyle M. Tanner, 34, 34 Chapmans Ave., Apt. B, Warwick, was arrested on a charge of theft of services/evasion of payment of fare and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. on April 3, Officer Nicholas J. DiNardo responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall for a report of shoplifting.

At the scene, a loss prevention associate told DiNardo that several minutes earlier, a man was observed selecting five men’s clothing items, entering a fitting room and exiting with only two items. The man then exited the store without making any attempt to pay and left the area in a brown or tan Honda SUV. The items were valued at $115.

On May 16 at 7:12 p.m., Officer James P. Wenneman and another officer responded to Smithfield Police headquarters for an arrest warrant pickup in connection with the shoplifting incident.

Maxwell M. McCaughey, 31, 93 Stillwater Road, Smithfield, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.

Just after 4 p.m. on May 11, Officer William R. Holz responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that officers at the scene had one suspect in custody, while mall security and a Warwick officer had located the second suspect in near the Nordstrom Rack location at the mall.

Holz responded to the location of the second suspect, who had been seen with the first suspect inside the Macy’s. The man said he had not been involved in the shoplifting and had separated from the other suspect in order to protect himself. No stolen merchandise was found on the man’s person.

Holz then returned to the Macy’s to meet with the first suspect. A loss prevention agent for the store told the officer that the suspect, a woman, had been observed carrying a visibly empty tote and a handbag in the store. The woman is said to have selected approximately 16 men’s clothing items and entered a fitting room. When she exited, the tote was “bulging and appeared to be full of merchandise.”

The woman is said to have then exited the store, passing all points of purchase, before being confronted by loss prevention personnel in the parking lot. The woman then attempted to flee but was detained by mall security. All of the merchandise, valued at $885.49, was recovered.

Shirleen M. Dicks, 60, 14 Health Ave., Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
