DUI

On June 18 at approximately 9 p.m., Officer Ali M. Jaafar responded to a motor vehicle accident in the area of Post Road and Bellair Avenue.

At the scene, Jaafar made contact with the operator of one of the vehicles involved, a 2018 Ford F150. The officer reports the operator’s speech was “slightly slurred” and that she was unsteady on her feet. The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that evening.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Jean M. Abbatematteo, 48, 212 Curtis St., Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. At headquarters, she is said to have consented to a chemical breath test, which reportedly found her blood alcohol content to be significantly above the legal limit.

Abbatematteo was later released into the custody of a sober adult with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence.

SHOPLIFTING

On the afternoon of May 13, Officer Normand G. Guilbert responded to the Target location at the Warwick Mall for a shoplifting complaint. Dispatch advised officers to be on the lookout for a blue Toyota Yaris believed to be involved in the incident.

At Target, an asset protection associate told Guilbert that a man had been found leaving the store with a trash can full of merchandise that had not been paid for. The merchandise – valued at $323 – was recovered and the man initially agreed to come back inside the store, according to the associate, but he then left with a woman who urged him not to go back inside.

A suspect was identified based on the registration of the Toyota Yaris in which the man and woman had left the scene. The asset protection associate is said to have later identified the suspect from a photo array.

At 4 p.m. on June 20, Officer Ben L. Bratko responded to the Warwick-Cranston line on Elmwood Avenue to pick up the shoplifting suspect, who was in the custody of Cranston Police.

James H. Stewart, 45, 271 New York Ave., Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

At the scene, an employee indicated that shortly before 3:30 p.m. that day, a woman had concealed a white, reusable Dunkin’ cup valued at approximately $10 in her purse. The woman paid for a coffee but did not pay for the cup before exiting the establishment, according to the employee.

On June 17, Paine returned to the Dunkin’ Donuts to obtain a copy of surveillance video from the incident. At that point, he was informed that the woman had returned, apologized and paid for the cup. As a result, Dunkin’ Donuts no longer wished to press charges.

On the evening of June 21, Officer Brian J. Holleran responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall for a report of two shoplifting suspects in the custody of asset protection personnel.

At the scene, one of the asset protection detectives told Holleran that the women had been observed selecting items from multiple departments before proceeding to separate fitting room stalls in the juniors department. When the women left the stalls, they proceeded to exit the store without making any attempts to pay for merchandise. A check of the stalls found the women had left behind no merchandise.

The women were met by personnel outside the store and escorted to the asset protection office with assistance from mall security. At that point, several clothing items were recovered, including $270 worth of merchandise in one of the women’s possession.

Soralys A. Blanco, 21, 238 Sackett St., Apt. 1, Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
