Police Log - 08/15/19

DUI

Shortly before 7 p.m. on Aug. 4, Officer Justin N. Martin was on patrol when he observed a gray Honda Accord attempt to make a right turn from Airport Road onto Post Road.

“The vehicle took the right hand turn at a high rate of speed and entered oncoming traffic, almost striking a vehicle traveling southbound on Post Road,” Martin reports. “This vehicle then veered sharply to the right to avoid hitting the vehicle and continued traveling north on Post Road.”

Martin attempted to initiated a motor vehicle stop and followed the vehicle as it entered the Ann & Hope parking lot, traveling through a red light as it did so.

The vehicle finally came to a stop and Martin made contact with the operator. He reports “immediately” detecting the odor of alcohol. The operator, he said, spoke with slurred speech and had “severely bloodshot” eyes.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that evening. She is also said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Erica L. Rojas, 35, 15 Daboll St., Providence, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused to submit to a chemical test.

Rojas was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, driving with a suspended license and a laned roadway violation.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, Officer Brian J. Holleran responded to a motor vehicle accident in the area of the entrance to CCRI at 400 East Ave.

At the scene, Holleran made contact with the operator of one of the vehicles involved. The officer reports he detected a “motor odor of an alcoholic beverage” on the operator’s breath. She is also said to have had “mildly bloodshot and watery eyes.”

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night. She is also said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Shakira Baker, 39, 91 Phenix Ave., West Warwick, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused to submit to a chemical test.

Baker was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and obedience to a traffic control device.

LARCENY

At approximately 2 p.m. on Aug. 5, Officer Timothy W. Lipka responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to meet with a reporting party regarding a larceny. The woman told Lipka her purse was stolen from her vehicle while she visited Salter’s Grove on the afternoon of Aug. 2. The purse, she said, contained a wallet, an iPhone 6S, a bank card, credit cards, a driver’s license and a Social Security card.

The woman said she subsequently discovered that approximately $700 had been taken from her bank account. The matter was documented. No suspects were immediately identified.

NO-CONTACT VIOLATION

Just after 8 p.m. on Aug. 4, Officer Evan E. Johnson was conducting a stationary traffic post at the intersection of Bald Hill Road and East Avenue when he observed a blue 2001 Infiniti sedan.

A records check revealed the vehicle’s Rhode Island registration plates were for a gray 2004 Lincoln, and that the registration had expired in February. Additionally, the owner listed for the registration was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Sixth Division District Court.

Johnson located the vehicle in the parking lot of the Dunkin’ Donuts at 699 Bald Hill Road and made contact with a man and a woman who were in its vicinity.

The man was identified as the owner listed on the registration. He was also found to have been the subject of a no-contact order for the woman in his company.

Jean Carlos Cuevas Santano, 33, 472 Providence St., second floor, Providence, was taken into custody on the bench warrant and additionally charged with violation of a no-contact order. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and held pending a morning court appearance.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

On the evening of Aug. 4, Officer Stephanie R. Pabis was conducting a traffic enforcement patrol at Oakland Beach and Warwick avenues when she observed a vehicle traveling north on Oakland Beach Avenue.

A records check found that the Massachusetts registration displayed on the vehicle – described as a silver 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee – was associated with a Volvo.

Pabis initiated a motor vehicle stop on Warwick Avenue and made contact with the operator, who was found through a records check to have a suspended license and prior convictions for driving with a suspended license. She was also wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court.

Nicole Marie Dimeo, 34, 453 Namquid Drive, Warwick, was taken into custody on the warrant and additionally charged with driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense. She was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and later taken to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

Dimeo was also cited for improper use of registration and operating with canceled registration.

At approximately 3:40 p.m. on Aug. 7, Officer Richard P. Odell responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Main and Buttonwoods avenues.

At the scene, Odell made contact with the operator of one of the vehicles involved. The woman was being treated by rescue personnel.

A records check found that the operator had never obtained a Rhode Island driver’s license and did not have an active license in any other state. A license issued to the operator in Massachusetts was suspended, and she was found to have two prior convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Joanna Marie Palombo, 32, 624 Buttonwoods Ave., Warwick, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.
