DUI

Just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 23, Officer Evan E. Johnson responded to the Cumberland Farms location on West Natick Road for a report of an intoxicated driver preparing to leave the scene.

While en route, Johnson observed the vehicle in question traveling west on West Natick Road. He followed the vehicle and initiated a stop in the area of Extended Stay America at 245 West Natick Road.

Johnson reports that as he announced the stop over the radio, he observed the driver’s door of the vehicle open and a “partially full can of beer” drop to the ground. The operator then closed the door and lit a cigarette, according to the officer.

Johnson then made contact with the operator and asked her to extinguish the cigarette. He reports detecting an “odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the woman’s breath, and describes her as having exhibited “thick-tongued” speech and “mildly bloodshot and watery” eyes.

The woman is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that day. She is also said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

The woman additionally agreed to submit to a preliminary breath test but “could not provide sufficient breath for the device to capture a sample,” according to Johnson.

Michelle K. Eletu, 43, 15 Barnsdale Road, Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she reportedly refused to submit to a chemical breath test.

Eletu was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence and cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and presence of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle. She was held as a bail violator pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, Officer Brenen J. Cardoza responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting suspect in custody.

At the scene, an asset protection agent at the store said the suspect had been observed selecting nine items from the men’s clothing department before entering a fitting room stall. When the suspect exited the fitting room, he had only four items. A check of the stall revealed several empty hangers and price tickets. The man then exited the store – passing all points of purchase without making any attempt to pay – before being met by asset protection and escorted back inside.

Asset protection recovered five men’s sleepwear items with a combined value of $257.20. The items had been concealed in a shoebox within a bag the suspect was carrying.

Randy Garcia Canario, 25, 312 Ohio Ave., second floor, Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Aug. 19, Detective Matthew T. Smith responded to the Kohl’s department store at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of shoplifting in progress. Dispatch then advised that two women involved in the incident had fled the scene heading toward West Warwick.

On Baker Street, Smith observed a woman matching the description of one of the suspects. The woman was “holding a pocketbook which appeared to have clothing overflowing from the bag,” according to the detective.

Smith made contact with the woman, who attempted to run away before being detained on Pontiac Street. Clothing in her bag contained tags from Kohl’s, the detective reports.

Lashana Weaver, 31, Jamaica, New York, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

According to a supplemental report from Officer Oliver M. Pinheiro, seven clothing items with a combined value of $149.46 were recovered and returned to Kohl’s.

A review of security camera footage by the store’s loss prevention personnel is said to have found the second suspect did not steal any clothing items, so no additional charges were pursued.

LARCENY

On the afternoon of Aug. 23, Officer Stephanie R. Pabis responded to the area of Bluff Avenue for a report of larceny of marine equipment.

At the scene, the reporting party told Pabis that a motor attached to his sailboat had been stolen. The man said he had last used the sailboat 11 or 12 days prior, and it had been moored approximately 150-200 feet from the shore.

The motor was described as a six-horsepower, four-stroke Nissan valued at approximately $1,500.

No security camera footage was available from nearby residences. The matter was documented.

VANDALISM

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Aug. 24, Officer Michael D. Walker was conducting a check of the parking lot at Park Elementary School when he observed a broken window in the rear of the building. The window contained multiple panes of glass and only the outermost pane was broken, according to Walker. The damage appeared new and broken glass was visible on the ground. The school department was notified.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Just after 11 a.m. on Aug. 15, Officer Aaron L. Steere observed a 2005 Nissan leave the parking lot of the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard. The officer reports that he was aware that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and that its operator had a suspended license.

Steere initiated a motor vehicle stop at the Interstate 95 north on-ramp and made contact with the operator. A records check then confirmed that the operator’s license was suspended and that the driver had three or more previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Yajaira Cortes, 33, 274 Hartford Ave., Apt. 4, Providence, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. Cortes was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court. She was additionally cited for improper use of registration.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 20, Officer Alfred J. Silveira observed a driver not wearing a seatbelt on Airport Road.

Silveira initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator. A subsequent records check found the man’s license was suspended and that he had at least three prior convictions for driving with a suspended license. The man was also wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court.

Jonathan Rodriguez, 29, 121 Waller St., Providence, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court and cited for operation of an unregistered vehicle and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Rodriguez was later transported to Superior Court.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Aug. 22, Officer Alfred J. Silveira was traveling west on Airport Road when he observed a 1997 GMC box truck traveling approximately 50 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Silveira initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator, who advised that his license was suspended and his vehicle’s registration was not active. A records check confirmed the suspended license and found that the registration had been canceled. The operator additionally had two or more previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Everett F. Gibbons, 46, 2 King St., North Kingstown, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for process. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Gibbons was additionally cited for operation of an unregistered vehicle, no insurance, and speeding.
