Police Log - 10/03/19

DUI

Just after 8 p.m. on Sept. 23, Officer Brian W. Fontaine and another officer were conducting a patrol when they stopped at a red light waiting to turn left from Greenwich Avenue onto East Avenue.

When the light turned green, Fontaine observed a white 2016 Audi A6 cross from the right lane into the left lane, “almost striking the curb on East Avenue while turning left.” The vehicle then accelerated and continued west on East Avenue at a high rate of speed, and the officer reports that he “observed the vehicle bounce back and forth between two lanes of travel on multiple occasions.”

Fontaine initiated a motor vehicle stop in the area of 375 East Ave. and made contact with the operator. The officer reports he “immediately detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from [the operator’s] breath.” The operator is additionally said to have slurred his speech and had “extremely bloodshot and watery eyes.”

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that day and refused to undergo field sobriety testing.

Matthew A. Tommasiello, 34, 9 Pheasant Court, Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Tommassiello was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, speeding, manner of turning at an intersection and a laned roadway violation. He was held pending his pickup by a sober adult.

COUNTERFEIT BILL

On Sept. 24 at approximately 11:45 p.m., Officer David G. Waddington was at the Cumberland Farms at 3335 Post Road preparing for a patrol when he observed a clerk looking suspiciously at a bill he had been handed by a customer.

The clerk is said to have held the bill up in an effort to see its security thread and watermark. Another clerk also came to the register to observe the bill, at which point Waddington stepped forward and offered to check.

Waddington reports that it “immediately” became clear to him that the bill – a $100 denomination – was a likely counterfeit, based on the paper on which it was printed and its lack of a watermark, security thread and other security features.

The woman who had passed the bill to the clerk claimed she had found it outside of a Cumberland Farms location in North Providence. The bill was then checked with a counterfeit marker, which Waddington states showed it was a fake.

Jane Hall, 61, 20 McGuire Road, Apt. 222, North Providence, was arrested on a charge of passing of counterfeit bills and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was also found to be wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court and was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

Waddington reports that police contacted the Secret Service regarding the incident.

LARCENY

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Sept. 21, Officer Rose E. Michel responded to Kent Hospital at 455 Toll Gate Road for a report of larceny. While she was en route, dispatch advised that hospital security and another officer were with the suspect at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Toll Gate Road,

At the scene, one of the hospital’s security officers told Michel that she had received a cell phone notification that the door of his vehicle – a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta – was open. The security officer then went to the hospital’s parking lot, where he saw the suspect inside his vehicle. He shouted at the suspect, who is said to have fled on foot toward Toll Gate Road.

Hospital security pursued and caught up with the suspect, who was said to be found in possession of a toiletry bag from the vehicle valued at $40, along with a military-style compass valued at $300 and a spare key to the vehicle.

Raymond Seeley, 46, 30 Washington St., Apt. 710, Central Falls, was arrested on a charge of larceny under $1,500 and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

SHOPLIFTING

Just before 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 23, Officer Javier F. Cabreja responded to the JCPenney location at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress.

While he was en route, dispatch advised that two male suspects had exited the store and been met by Officer Justin N. Martin. One of the suspects ran from Martin but was subsequently located.

At the scene, a loss prevention officer with the store told Cabreja that one of the suspects had been observed serving as a lookout inside the store while the other suspect concealed multiple men’s sweaters and pairs of jeans in bags taken from his pocket. The men then exited the store without making any attempt to pay for the $452 worth of merchandise, which was recovered.

Angel L. Rivera, 49, 100 Broad St., Apt. 724, Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Jesus Nater, 44, 120 Sassafras St., Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was additionally taken into custody on a bench warrant issued from Sixth Division District Court, and was held pending a morning court appearance.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 23, Officer Michael D. Walker was conducting a patrol when he observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Potowomut Road at a high rate of speed. A radar check found the vehicle to be traveling at 47 mph in a 15 mph zone.

Walker pursued the vehicle – described as a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu – and initiated a stop. The operator is said to have been unable to provide identification, although the officer was able to identify him based on a driver’s license picture in the state’s database.

A records check found the operator’s license was suspended and that he had three previous convictions for operating with a suspended license, according to Walker.

Austin T. Harry, 24, 58 Paula Drive, North Kingstown, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was additionally cited for speeding and operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, and was later transported to Third Division District Court for arraignment.

WARRANTS

At approximately 5 p.m. on Sept. 21, Officer Walter C. Larson was on patrol when he observed a blue Toyota Camry traveling south on Post Road at a high rate of speed. A radar check found the vehicle was traveling 50 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Larson pursued the vehicle and initiated a stop in the area of Park View Avenue and Lerner Street.

Larson made contact with the vehicle’s operator and sole passenger. A records check found the operator was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court.

Paul J. Botelho Jr., 31, 17 Fairbanks St., Apt. 17, Cranston, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was additionally issued a citation for speeding and later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions. *** Shortly after 6 p.m. on Sept. 23, Officer Brian W. Fontaine and another officer were conducting a patrol in the area of 2485 Warwick Ave. when they observed two mopeds in the area of Oakland Beach Avenue near the entrance to the parking lot. A passenger on one of the mopeds was not wearing a helmet, according to Fontaine.

The officers made contact with the moped’s operator and two passengers, and a subsequent records check found one of the passengers was wanted on an active arrest warrant issued from Coventry Police.

Ashley E. Dobrolet, 31, 6 Belmont Ave., Johnston, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was held pending a transfer of custody to Coventry Police.
