Police Log - 12/3/19

DUI

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 23, Officer Richard P. Odell was conducting a routine patrol on West Shore Road when he observed a white 2009 Ford Explorer abruptly swerve and cross the fog line while traveling west.

Odell turned to follow the vehicle and observe it continue to swerve, crossing the fog line and the double-yellow center line.

The officer initiated a motor vehicle stop and noticed that the Explorer’s front passenger-side tire was missing, with bits of rubber remaining around the exposed rim.

Odell made contact with the operator and reports immediately detecting a strong odor of alcohol. He additionally reports that the operator slurred her speech and exhibited bloodshot, watery eyes.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that evening and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Dena M. Refino, 36, 49 Yorktown Road, North Kingstown, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Refino was later released into the custody of a sober adult with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, laned roadway violations and driving with expired registration.

LARCENY

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, Officer Javier F. Cabreja responded to the intersection of Landmark Road and Red Chimney Drive for a report of larceny.

The reporting party was no longer in the area when Cabreja arrived, and the officer then responded to a Cowesett Road address to speak with the man. The reporting party said he had been working on Landmark Road between roughly 1:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. that afternoon when a backpack leaf blower – valued at roughly $550 – was stolen from his equipment, which was parked on Red Chimney Drive.

The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 23, Officer Charles A. Austin Jr. responded to the Wyndham Hotel at 1850 Post Road for a report of larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party told Austin that a wallet belonging to an employee of the hotel had been stolen. The wallet was said to have contained a Social Security card, medical insurance card, driver’s license and employment paperwork. The employee then told the officer that she had placed her items in a locker when she arrived for work, and when she returned, the items were all missing.

A review of security camera footage is said to have shown a non-employee entering the locker room and remaining for several minutes before exiting.

The matter was forwarded to detectives.

On Nov. 24 at 3:49 p.m., Officer Alfred J. Silveira responded to a Hollis Avenue home for a report of larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party told Silveira that it appeared someone had attempted to steal an air conditioner unit from the rear of the property. The unit had been cut from the building and was tipped over. It had last been scene fully in tact on Nov. 22.

The reporting party additionally said a container with approximately 200 pounds of “e-waste” – items such as computer parts and wires – had been taken from the property. He estimated the contents of the container to be worth approximately $200 if scrapped.

The matter was documented.

VANDALISM

Just before 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, Officer William R. Holz responded to a Jefferson Boulevard business for a report of a window being shot out with a BB gun.

At the scene, the reporting party told Holz he had been sitting in his officer at approximately 3:15 p.m. when he heard something strike the window behind him. He then observed a small hole and a long, horizontal fracture in the window – damage he believed had been caused by a pellet gun of some sort.

No security camera footage was immediately available. The matter was documented.

Just after 8 p.m. on Nov. 21, Officer Sara L. Goes responded to a report of malicious damage to a motor vehicle outside the Olive Garden restaurant at 31 Universal Boulevard.

At the scene, Goes met with the reporting party and observed a long white scratch along the driver’s side doors of the woman’s 2017 Toyota Sienna involved in the incident. The reporting party said she noticed the damage when she returned to her vehicle after eating at the restaurant.

The damage was photographed. Olive Garden’s management indicated no security camera footage of the parking lot was available.

WARRANT

At approximately 12:43 a.m. on Nov. 23, Officer Oliver M. Pinheiro was conducting a patrol on Post Road when he observed a black pickup truck in the parking lot of Chipotle. The restaurant and the other nearby businesses were all closed.

Pinheiro parked his cruiser nearby and observed the truck’s driver’s-side occupant exit the vehicle and enter the bed of the truck. At that point, the man “began to open numerous containers” located in that portion of the vehicle.

Pinheiro then made contact with the man, who a subsequent records check revealed was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Fourth Division District Court.

Dennis John Vasconcellos Jr., 35, 6 Ridley Lane, Richmond, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later taken to the Adult Correctional Institutions to await a court appearance.
