FRAUD

At approximately 6:45 p.m. on Feb. 10, Officer Kevin Warren responded to a Harding Avenue home for a report of larceny from a motor vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Warren that his vehicle had been broken into. He said his wallet and a tray from the center console had both been taken from his 2019 Lexus NX 300H. He said he discovered the break-in and contacted police after receiving a fraud text message warning for his bank card.

The reporting party told Warren he believed he had locked the vehicle when he parked it on Feb. 9, although the officer reports observing no signs of forced entry.

According to the reporting party, the wallet contained two $100 bills, two $20 bills, three $5 bills, Chinese and Hong Kong entry IDs, a bank card and a Massachusetts driver’s license.

The man also reported a series of fraudulent purchases totaling more than $1,500 were made using the bank card in Warwick, Cranston and Johnston. The purchases were made at Savers, McDonalds, Lowe’s, Walmart and Stop & Shop.

No security camera footage was immediately available. The matter was documented and forwarded to detectives, and warrants were later issued for the arrest of two suspects.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. on Feb. 27, Officer Gian Micheletti responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to take custody of Kelly S. Barlow, 34, 70 Dixon St., Providence, and Michael A. Lyons, 41, of the same address.

Barlow was turning herself in on a warrant for charges of fraudulent use of credit cards and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent. She was processed and held pending arraignment.

Lyons was turning himself in on a warrant for a charge of fraudulent use of credit cards. He was also processed and held pending arraignment.

ATTEMPTED LARCENY

Just before 3 a.m. on Feb. 24, Officer Johnathan DiPietro was conducting a routine patrol in the area of the Apponaug rotaries. In light of the recent theft of cooking oil from grease traps outside local establishments, his particular focus was on restaurants and eateries.

As DiPietro passed PieZoni’s on Post Road, he observed a “large, white, flatbed style truck with something large affixed to the back of the bed.” He reports the vehicle matched the description of one seen on security camera footage from Captain’s Catch Seafood and by an employee at Cosmic Pizza, which had both been the target of cooking oil thefts.

DiPietro parked across from PieZoni’s and observed the truck. He reports hearing a loud humming noise consistent with a pump or generator coming from the direction of the establishment.

Shortly thereafter, the truck left the PieZoni’s parking lot heading north on Post Road. DiPietro pursued it and initiated a stop on Veterans Memorial Drive.

“As I approached the vehicle…I could immediately smell the odor of cooking oil coming from the large steel tank located on the back of the flatbed,” the officer reports, adding: “The entire vehicle was covered in used cooking oil as well.”

DiPietro made contact with the vehicle’s operator and sole passenger – both men wearing “orange and yellow high visibility jackets and black plastic gloves.” Additional officers then arrived on scene.

Jesus Eduardo Pereira Mendes, 29, Queens, New York, and Franklin Gustavo Zurita Reyna, 27, Ridgewood, New York, were both arrested and charged with attempted under $1,500. Both were transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and held pending further questioning from detectives.

WARRANTS

Just after 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, officers David Boardman and Derek Mourato were conducting a directed patrol of the Motel 6 parking lot on Jefferson Boulevard when they observed a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2008 Hyundai Elantra.

The man “appeared to have his head down and his eyes closed,” according to Boardman, who then made contact with the man to check on his condition. A subsequent records check revealed the man was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Sixth Division District Court.

Juan J. Segura Pinales, 24, 31 Dorchester Ave., Apt. 3, Providence, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Feb. 25, Officer Ryan McGarry was conducting a directed patrol at Extended Stay America on West Natick Road when he observed four people sitting in a vehicle in the front lot.

“As I drove past the vehicle, the rear driver’s side passenger turned his head back toward me and snapped his head forward,” McGarry writes in his report. “I backed my vehicle up and illuminated the interior of the vehicle with my passenger’s side alley light.”

McGarry reports that one of the passengers exited the vehicle and approached his cruiser, saying he was a guest at the motel and displaying a room key. The officer then asked the man to get back inside the vehicle.

An additional officer responded to the scene and McGarry obtained identification from all four occupants of the vehicle. A records check found the passenger with whom the officer had initially made contact was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court.

Claude Guindon, 33, 999 York Ave., Apt. 2, Pawtucket, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.
