OBSTRUCTION

On April 24 at approximately 8:42 a.m., Officer Aaron Steere was on patrol in the area of Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard. He then observed a tan Buick with New York license plates, which was familiar to him as he reported that Officer Wells had seen this vehicle operating suspiciously in the lot of Motel 6 previously.

Based on Officer Steere’s conversation with Officer Wells, he learned that the vehicle had an expired registration. Officer Steer then observed the vehicle turn north onto Jefferson Boulevard, and initiated a traffic stop. Contact was made with the driver, who at identified himself as Daniel Skinner, 20, of 3741 Harrison Ave. in Blasdell, N.Y. He also provided registration for the car, which belonged to a third party.

A check of the registration confirmed that it was expired, and that Skinner had been operating the vehicle on an expired license. Officer Steere then responded back to the vehicle and informed Skinner of the suspension. He then asked a passenger if he had an active license to operate the car. The front passenger advised that he did and identified himself as Lamont Jackson, but did not have positive identification on his person.

Officer Steere then ran background checks on the passenger, which did not show any license data out of New York. An attempt to identify Jackson by running a criminal history check was also unsuccessful. The officer then returned to the Buick and interviewed the pair about their travel plans. The allegedly stated that they work for a company traveling from state to state going to events where they sell toys and collectibles. The passenger then stated that his wallet and personal belongings were with his boss, who was in a different state and had taken care of the room reservations at the motel.

The officer then advised Skinner that the vehicle would have to be towed. The driver then advised the officer that he knew his passenger only as Lamont Jackson and that he had known him for a couple of years after he met him in Buffalo, N.Y. Conflicting stories were then given as to who rented the room and if Jackson’s boss could arrive on scene to provide his identification.

Due to the increasing number of inconsistent statements made by Jackson, Officer Steer reported that he believed the passenger was lying about his identity. He then agreed to be transported to police headquarters to be fingerprinted for identification purposes only. Several minutes after being fingerprinted, a confirmation through police databases revealed that the subject was not Lamont Jackson, but was in fact Marcus Dupree, 34, of 39 Gallatin St. in Providence. He was found to have two active warrants.

The driver, Skinner, was charged with one count of driving on a suspended license, and driving with an expired registration. His vehicle was towed from the scene.

Dupree was arrested for the outstanding warrants, and charged with obstructing an officer in execution of his duty. He was held for the bail commissioner and later released after posting bail on the two warrants.

LARCENY

On April 28 at approximately 1:19 p.m., Officer Timothy Kenyon was dispatched to the Warwick Avenue Shaw’s Supermarket for a report of a larceny.

At the scene he met with the victim, who stated she was at Shaw’s when she noticed that her Samsung Galaxy S8 phone was missing from her purse. She told the officer that she believed the phone was removed by a young Hispanic male that was about 20 years old while she was checking out at a register. She then attempted to locate the device using an app, which showed it in the area of Elmwood Avenue in Providence. There are currently no suspects or witnesses.

VANDALISM

At approximately 9:46 a.m. on May 29, Officer Jill Marshall was dispatched to the area of Larchwood Drive at Cowesett Road for two vehicles that had their windows broken.

Upon arrival the officer spoke with the first complainant, who stated that at approximately 8:55 a.m. she parked her vehicle on Larchwood Drive near St. Gregory’s Church and left to attend mass. When she returned she found her right front passenger window had been smashed. There appeared to have been no access to the vehicle. There were no witnesses to the incident.

Officer Marshall then met with another complainant, who said that she parked her car just before 9 a.m. and also went into St. Gregory’s Church. When she returned to her car she found her passenger window broken and that a black leather purse containing multiple credit cards and her cell phone had been taken.

While conducting an investigation, Officer Boardman had been flagged down while driving through Apponaug as someone had found the woman’s purse. It appeared as if nothing was missing. There were no witnesses to the events.

CAR SCRATCHED

Officer David Boardman responded to a Ticonderoga Drive residence on April 29 around 4:30 p.m. There he met with a reporting party who advised the officer that he went to start his classic car in his back yard, and when he removed the cover he noticed large scratches on the driver’s side.

The man told the officer that prior to the winter, the car had no scratches on it. He estimated the damage at approximately $3,000. The scratches appeared to have been made by a key and ran the length of the driver’s side of the vehicle. The man stated that he does not know who would have done it and that he does not have any issues with anyone. There are no suspects at this time.

SHOPLIFTING

On May 1 around 5:20 p.m., Officer Karen Haarr responded to a call from JC Penney. According to the report, store security observed two females acting suspiciously in the junior’s department.

The women, later identified as Asia Gass, 19, of 193 Ohio Ave. in Providence, and Jakyrah Barbour, 18, of 335 Hartford Ave. in Providence, were allegedly seen selecting various merchandise and then enter a fitting room. They then reportedly concealed the merchandise and exited the store without paying. Once outside, the woman were approached by security and brought back inside.

The merchandise Gass had in her possession was valued at $157, while $145 worth of merchandise was recovered from Barbour. Both were transported to police headquarters, where they were charged with one count of shoplifting each and issued a no trespass order for JC Penney. They were later released.
