Warwick man faces new terrorism charge

A Warwick man arrested in connection with a terrorism investigation last year is facing a new charge.

Nicholas Alexander Rovinski, 25, is accused of conspiring to commit acts of terrorism across national boundaries from behind bars.

David Daoud Wright, 26, of Everett, Mass., who was arrested as part of the same investigation last year, is also charged in the superseding indictment announced by federal authorities last week.

Rovinski and Wright had been indicted in June 2015 on charges of conspiring to provide materials support to the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.

Authorities allege the two men and Wright’s uncle, Usaamah Abdullah Rahim, plotted to behead a conservative blogger in New York. Rahim was killed during a confrontation with police in Roslindale, Mass., on June 2 of last year.

The indictment alleges that “beginning in at least February 2015, Wright began discussing ISIL’s call to kill non-believers in the United States with Rahim and Rovinski and they began plotting and recruiting members for their ‘martyrdom’ operation.”

Wright is alleged to have drafted organizational documents and conducted online searches regarding firearms, tranquilizers, and the creation of secret militias in the U.S. At the same time, authorities say, Rahim was communicating with members of ISIL overseas – including Junaid Hussain, who was killed in an airstrike in Raqqah, Syria, on Aug. 24, 2015.

“Wright, Rovinski and Rahim each allegedly conspired to commit attacks and kill persons inside the United States on behalf of ISIL,” the government’s statement reads. “In preparation for their attack, Rovinski conducted research on weapons that could be used to behead their victims.

According to authorities, “Since being arrested, Rovinski has sought to continue their planned attacks and has written letters to Wright from prison discussing ways to take down the U.S. government and decapitate non-believers.”
