Wayss makes Stonehill commitment official

Posted

Pilgrim senior and standout distance runner Danika Wayss will be continuing her athletic and academic career at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts in the fall.

She signed a National Letter of Intent on Thursday in front of family members, her coach, Mike Daniels, and school administrators, and she couldn’t have been more thrilled to make her decision official.

“I was a little nervous for the signing day because I verbally committed back in early January, so I knew I’d have the signing day coming up,” Wayss said. “As it approached, I was definitely a little nervous, but I’m really excited. I was excited for today, now I know I’m officially committed.”

The athletic interest wasn’t the only factor that swayed Wayss’ decision to go to Stonehill, though. Being an excellent student, academic opportunities were also important.

“Once I applied and got in, I was accepted into the honors program there,” Wayss said. “That was something that was definitely appealing. It’ll look good academically, graduating from there from the honors program.”

Wayss will continue to run cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track, under Skyhawks’ head coach Karen Boen. Wayss is looking forward to running for Boen, who is currently in her 18th season coaching at Stonehill.

“What really drew me to the school was Coach Boen and the relationship she had with the girls,” Wayss said. “I just really liked the feel of it there.”

In her time at Pilgrim, Wayss has left her mark. Her most recent achievement came in the winter, when she made it on the podium with a sixth-place finish in the 1,000 at the RIIL Indoor State Championships.

She also impressed in her final cross country season, taking eighth out of 139 runners at the state meet in the fall.

Now, she is in the midst of her final outdoor track season, and she’s hoping to put the finishing touches on an outstanding year in athletics.

“I guess I’ll have to see how the season plays out, but I don’t have the record in the 1,500, and I’d like to get that before I leave,” Wayss said. “I’d love to make All-State in outdoor.”
