Warwick Continental American’s Sheridan Electric cruised past Apponaug’s Cal Ripken, East Greenwich Car Wash 15-1 in four innings on Sunday evening during the last game of the Majors best-of-three, pool play tournament for the 2019 City Series Championship at Warwick North’s “The Pit”.

Sunday night’s contest was mainly to decide which of the two leagues will enjoy homefield advantage in the title game as both Sheridan Electric and EG Car Wash will rematch in the championship on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. back at “The Pit.”

Sheridan Electric put in a strong effort despite the game not being for all the marbles.

“They come to play hard every game,” WCA manager Jamie Luisi said. “And I told them, this is a game to win. We don’t have to win it, but let’s win the game and play baseball, which these guys like to do.”

“So, they came tonight and showed it,” Luisi continued. “And they put up 15 runs. And I know they didn’t have their best pitching today, which we’re going to see on Tuesday, but it’s still getting focused and getting up to win baseball games.”

Sheridan Electric was led by the bats of Ethan Luisi, who contributed two hits and three RBI, Joey Riviera, one hit and three RBI, Danny Brown, two hits and two RBI, and Charlie Brown, two hits and one RBI.

EG Car Wash’s lone run came during the third inning when Ryan Kauffman hit an RBI single.

Anthony Burt earned the win for Sheridan Electric, pitching two innings, and striking out three with one walk, while allowing zero runs on three hits, and then Zack LaBonte and Charles Brown came on in relief and closed out the game.

Vasilies Tsakledies started on the bump for Apponaug and took the loss. The right-hander ran into trouble in the bottom of the first inning after failing to locate his pitches.

Tsakledies walked the first two batters he faced in, Charlie Brown and Ethan Luisi, and then Mason Broomfield hit a routine fly ball to center field, which was dropped by Kayden Baccarie, and that loaded the bases.

Next, Tsakledies walked in three runs when he walked three straight batters in, Ben Diaz, Joey Riviera and AJ Bonang, and that put WCA on top 3-0.

Then, Apponaug went to its bullpen and got Jake Rodrigues, who hit the first batter he saw in, Danny Brown, which scored Diaz from third and extended the WCA advantage to 4-0.

Next, with one out, Zack LaBonte shot a rocket at the shortstop, Drew Agostinelli, who made an error, and that scored Riviera from third and increased the WCA margin to 5-0.

Then, Jack Proulx drove in Bonang when he socked and infield hit at the second baseman, which extended the Sheridan Electric lead to 6-0.

After that, Charles Brown belted an RBI single by the shortstop and drove in Burt, who reached base on a fielder’s choice, and that put WCA up 7-0.

Next, Luisi socked a two-run single by the second baseman and scored both LaBonte and Proulx and upped the WCA advantage to 9-0.

Then, Broomfield launched an RBI single to right and scored Charles Brown from third and extended the WCA advantage to 10-0.

Some of the whitewashing can be attributed to the fact that East Greenwich Car Wash hasn’t played much baseball as of late.

“Unfortunately, we had some bad breaks with pitching today,” Apponaug manager Brad French said. “Besides the last game, there was a large time frame of probably a month where we hadn’t pitched or played. And so it’s really hard for these kids to immaculate back to traditional pitching.”

“And plus we actually play at a 50-70 ball field,” French added. “So, we’re actually a little bit larger ball field. So, I think the pitching kind of throws off some of these kids because we’re not used to pitching on a 46-foot pitching mound. We’re used to playing on a 50-foot pitching mound. So, it’s a little bit different for us because we’re a Cal Ripken league verses a traditional little league.”

Apponaug got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when Kauffman hit an RBI single down the first baseline and scored Agostinelli from third and pulled EG Car Wash within 10-1.

But in the bottom of the third, WCA would add to its edge when Luisi slammed an RBI single to right and knocked in Charles Brown from third while increasing the WCA margin to 11-1.

Then, with the bases loaded, Riviera hit an RBI single to shallow right and scored Luisi, and when the right fielder went to first to try and catch Riviera, an error occurred, which also allowed Broomfield to score, and it put WCA up 13-1.

Next, Diaz, who walked, scored from third during a passed ball, and that extended the WCA cushion to 14-1.

Lastly, Danny Brown hit an RBI single to center and drove in Riviera from third and that ballooned the WCA advantage to 15-1.

EG Car Wash hopes there will be a much different result when the two squads play again for the title tonight.

“Overall, we’ll come back strong on Tuesday,” French said. “We’re looking forward to just a different outcome. Unfortunately, we had just a large amount of walks today given up on our side. And so, we’ll just have to look to reverse that and come back strong on Tuesday, which we will.”

On the other side, WCA’s Jamie Luisi is convinced his team can prevail again on Tuesday in the championship game.

“I feel really confident,” Luisi said. “I feel like this team is just amazing. They just come to play. And I’ll have Mason Broomfield start for us on Tuesday and we’ll put the “D” behind him, and I feel that we’re going to score more runs than Apponaug on Tuesday.”
