WFFSC gets tourney win at Gillette Stadium

The Warwick Firefighter’s Soccer Club traveled north to compete in the 2019 4v4 New England Revolution Cup at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, and made some noise as the 18U club took first place and the 10U team second.

The tournament did not feature a 16U division, so the WFFSC 16’s would have to move to the 18U group. Despite the age difference, WFFSC proved to be one of the premier clubs in the region as it finished with an overall record of 3-0-1 and won the championship.

“They just played really well, it’s a very talented group of kids that we selected to do the tournament and they really just meshed together. You never really know what you’re going to enter into when you go into these tournaments, especially when you go out of state. Generally, you play against teams that you do not play every day, so you kind of go into it blind. They had a great mindset and a great confidence and they did their thing,” said WFFSC 18U coach Jessie Carpenter.

Carpenter was also happy to see her players enjoy their time at the big venue, and to get to feel like one of the pros.

“They love it. Two of them had played in the tournament before but the other kids were new to it. We also got to play on Friday night under the lights. It’s an incredible feeling and you kind of absorb the atmosphere,” said Carpenter, who also saw the tournament as a learning opportunity for the kids. “It’s awesome and it instills everything that we have taught them since they were young soccer players … to use your talents to help your team, to have confidence in your team, to work together. It was a good experience overall for them, especially since many of them don’t play together on a regular basis.”

WFFSC is the state’s largest soccer club and its numbers continue to grow each season. Carpenter and company enjoyed being able to flash their talents on the regional level, and show how strong of a program WFFSC is.

“It’s strong. Warwick Firefighters is the largest club in the state and it’s a very family-oriented place. We teach these kids to love the game, most of these boys we’ve had since they were 4 or 5 years old and have brought them up through the system. It’s nice that we can go state to state and share this,” said Carpenter. “We’ve gone to New Hampshire and have won tournaments, we’ve gone to Massachusetts and have won tournaments, we’ve been given a lot of opportunities.”

The WFFSC 18U team included: Olin Thompson, James Madden, Evan McGregor, Tyler Carpenter, Thomas Sullivan, JP Lockhart and Aiden Wine. Coaches were Jessie Carpenter and Jeff Lockhart.
