William R. Barker

William R. Barker, 90, of Warwick died Monday at home. He was the beloved husband of the late Norma B. (Boemler) Barker.

Born in Warwick, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Nettie L. (Armitage) Barker. During World War II, Bill honorably served in the United States Army. William was employed as Customer Service Manager at the US Postal Service retiring after 45 years of service. He was a graduate of Warwick High School and was an active member of St. Barnabas Church and served on the Vestry of Church and as Church Junior and Senior Warden for 13 years and as a Delegate to the Episcopal Convention for 50 years. William also served as President of the Warwick Postal Employees Federal Credit Union for 45 years and President of the RI Credit Union League. Bill was a National Director of CUNA International for 8 years and active in the National Association of Postal Supervisors from 1963-89 and served as the Secretary of Branch #105. He was also the Treasurer of the Warwick Church’s Bowling League for over 40 years and a Past-President of the Friendly Mixers Square Dance Group.

William is survived by his loving daughters: Katherine L. Richardson (George) of Exeter and Karen A. Thornton (Dan) of Coventry; four cherished grandchildren: Andrew Richardson, Kyle Thornton, Brett Thornton and Erin Hus; and four great-grandchildren: Riley, Cora, Jillian and Garrett. He was the brother of the late Charles E. Barker, Jr., Alfred O. Barker, Barbara M. Gowdey, Dorothy Peckham Quint and Harriet Olive Bordo.

His funeral will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 10 a.m. with a Requiem Eucharist in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 3257 Post Road, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Burial with military honors will take place in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
