Falcons take 3rd at Wilson Cup

A handful of local wrestling teams made the trip to North Kingstown High School to compete in the Wilson Cup tournament last weekend, with many athletes taking home hardware as they officially kicked off the 2018-19 season.

Chariho took home first place as a team overall with a score of 249. The Cranston West Falcons also had a strong showing, placing third with a score 141.5. Bishop Hendricken took home fifth place with 99 points, while Toll Gate captured ninth place with 67.5 points.

Bishop Hendricken’s Noah Sclama took home first place in the 113-pound division over Cranston West’s Anthony DeCotis. Hendricken’s Isaiah Guerrero would later top West’s Christopher Gomez for the 132-pound title. Hendricken’s Adolfo Betancur would later take home first place at 285 pounds for the Hawks.

West would get another first-place finish from Tyler Stevenson, who won the 126-pound crown for the Falcons

Matthew Maroney took home second place in the 138-pound division for Bishop Hendricken, West’s Noah Robert finished second overall at 170 pounds for the Falcons.

Toll Gate’s Will Niles finished in the semifinals of the 138-pound class for the Titans, while West’s Landon Giampietro finished in the semifinals of the 152-pound class. West’s Kenny Sampson advanced to the semifinals in the 120-pound class.

Toll Gate’s Caleb Giles made it to the semifinal round of the 220-pound tournament while teammate Connor Tainsh made it to the semifinals of the 182-pound class.

West’s Sean Rodrigues advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 182-pound class, while Toll Gate’s Justin Perreault advanced to the quarterfinals of the 145-pound class. Bishop Hendricken’s Hunter Mumford fell in the quarterfinals, while teammates Miguel Reyes and West’s Dylan Walters each advanced to the quarterfinals in the 160-pound competition.

George Foronda also made it to the quarterfinals for Toll Gate, ad Aidan Zabbo advanced to the quarterfinal round in the 106-pound division for Bishop Hendricken.
