WIND RIVER
* * * *
(Intense thriller)

There are many films labeled as “intense thriller,” but “Wind River” is the real thing.
We saw this movie with our daughter and son-in-law, all four of us having different tastes in movies...and we all liked it.
Jeremy Renner stars as a wildlife officer in cold and snowy northern Wyoming, where different cultures (white, Native Americans and oil riggers) share the rough wilderness. Inspired by a true story, the movie deals with justice, revenge, survival, grief, guilt and culture clash, as people from wide backgrounds band together to find the brutal rapist and killer of a Native American teenager.
Elizabeth Olsen plays a young, inexperienced FBI agent who is assigned to the case, arriving from Florida by way of Vegas, with only the clothes on her back and about to quickly learn about extreme cold, winter storms and an unfamiliar culture.
Renner and Olsen are terrific together as they slowly uncover cause and effect, tracking men through the wintry territory on ski mobiles, while facing danger from both humans and animals.
The nearly two-hour movie grabs hold of you and never lets go, right up to the violent conclusion and the justice/revenge that follows. The movie opens roles for Native American actors, including the terrific Graham Greene.
Rated R for some very violent scenes.
The credits tell us that many young Native American girls disappear without a trace, with little being done to find them.
