Winman boys top Bain and Park View, girls take second

The Winman boys and girls cross country teams impressed last week when they faced off against Bain and Park View at Warwick City Park.

The boys finished in first place with a scores of 15 and 17 against Park View’s 47 and Bain’s 53. The girls finished in second place with 36 points. Park View took first with 23 points.

Luc Dionne led the Warriors with a first-place finish overall with a time of 10.29. Ryan Henderson finished in second, while Josh Maynard took third, John Maynard took fourth, and Jamie Luna seventh.

Oce Lowe took second place overall for the girls with a time of 11.13. Teammate Giana Aunchman finished in fourth place while Summer Barrett claimed seventh.

Winman girls coach Peter Kiley has been excited with the team’s progress this season, and feels that the Warriors have enough balance to be a contender for the long term.

“We’re actually pretty balanced, we have some returning veterans. Now that the middle school realigned to 6th-8th grade we inherited a lot of good 6th graders. We’re a little heavy on 6th and 7th graders but a lot of these kids coming in already have a running background, a big athletic background,” said Kiley.

Winman boys coach Mike Vadney has also been impressed with the club, and feels that the Warriors have been peaking at the right time as the season begins winding down.

“Today went great. They’ve been responding really well. They like this better than they did earlier in the season, especially earlier in the season where we would have to cancel practices because of the heat. This is perfect weather for them,” said Vadney, who also feels that the Winman roster is as deep as ever.

“We’ve got some strong runners. For the boys you have Luc Dionne, Ryan Henderson had a great race and is always consistent. Josh and John Maynard are very strong runners, Jack Coleman is a great runner. For the girls we have Oce, Giana finished right behind her and was a beast last year. Summer Barrett has had a really great season, seems like every time you turn around she’s finishing in the top-5.”

The next stop for the Warriors is the conference championship, and the state title shortly after that. Vadney hopes to see the Warriors finish strong, and enjoy the season while it lasts.

“It’s a fast season,” said Vadney. “We always tell them to enjoy this, because before you know it you’re going to turn around and it’s going to be the end of the season.”
