Kelsie Halsband and Abriana Skipworth, Winman 8th graders, are excited to have their poetry performed at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Thursday, March 30.

In October, their music teacher Mrs. Gervais assigned a poetry project to promote anti bullying. All of her 8th graders wrote either an acrostic or haiku poem, and 20 of the poems were sent to the statewide Tsetse Initiative Poetry Contest. Kelsie and Abriana’s poems were chosen, along with five others from students in different schools in Rhode Island, out of the 200 poems submitted.

Each year, PPAC offers their Bank of America Arts Showcase to all educators in the state. Everyone is welcome to bring students to the performances for free and there are usually four different performances during the school year.

This is the second time Winman has participated in the Tsetse Initiative. In 2015, three poems were chosen. This year, the performance is called EDU-Arts Civility, A Concert for the Arts to Stop Bullying. The lead performer has poems set to music and sings them the day of the performance.

EDU-Arts Civility is a compilation of music, dance, video and motivational speaking on the topic of civility and bullying prevention. The Tsetse Initiative’s major partners for this project are Master of Ceremonies Chief Justice Frank J. Williams, Bianca Sings, Black Strap Molasses, Festival Ballet, Part of the Oath, Kevin Fabian, Michael Diaz, and others.

Winman is proud to have the poetry of Kelsie and Abriana as part of this performance. The school looks forward to seeing them on the big screen to introduce their poems and hear it transformed into song.
