Winman to bring the 'Magical Land of Oz' to life

Students at Winman Junior High are set to premiere this weekend The Magical Land of Oz, which they’ve been working on since October. The tale will take audiences on a magical journey that begins with a terrible storm that transports Dorothy and her pup Toto to the Land of Oz. There, she encounters Munchkins, the Wicked Witch, a scarecrow with no brain, a tin man with no heart, and a cowardly lion with no courage. Glinda the Good Witch sends Dorothy on her way down the yellow brick road with ruby slippers. Dorothy is instructed to go to the Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz. The Wizard may be the one to fulfill Dorothy’s wish to return home to Kansas, the Scarecrow’s wish for a brain, the tin man’s wish for a heart, and the cowardly lion’s wish for courage.

Directors Kristine Gervais and Nadine Priest are particularly excited that The Magical Land of Oz was a school effort. Art teacher Gloria Santilli’s Contemporary Art class designed a munchkin house and many other props, including Dorothy’s house, the palace gates, the fighting trees, and the tin man’s heart, for the show. Other art classes taught by Sue Morgan and Cristina DeGaetano created other props like pocketbooks for the Emerald City scenes and the apples and large tree in the Forest of the Fighting Tree scene. Ryan Marsland’s Digital Communications class created flyers and show programs. Music teacher Jessica Mathias worked after school with club members interested in set design creating the Emerald City, and music teachers Peter Kiley and Joshua Sayer helped keep the sound systems in shape.

Approximately 80 7th and 8th grade students are in the Drama Club, which is the largest club in the school. Students in the club are interested not only in acting, but also in set design, backstage personnel, props, lighting, and sound operations.

Performances of The Magical Land of Oz are Friday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $7. Children under age five can attend for free.

The actors have worked hard and hope all will enjoy the performance. Lead parts are played by Hope Madden, Dorothy; Jessica Joyce, Glinda the Good Witch; Amelia Lombard, the scarecrow; Robert Rooney, the tin man; Tripper Normand, the cowardly lion; and Adam King, Oz.
