Wireless Zones team up with local animal shelters

Another opportunity to find a new furry, forever friend is happening this weekend on Sunday, May 19, when an adoption/donation event will be taking place at the Verizon Wireless Zone, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., located at 76 Gate Road in North Kingstown.

This is the first time a group of Wireless Zones (Verizon retail stores) in Rhode Island have partnered with local animal shelters. The stores are working primarily with the North Kingstown Animal Shelter Support Foundation, which will be bringing 10 animals that are in need of adoption. It may not be many animals, but there will lots of information provided on where the shelters are, what kind of animals the shelters hold, and the adoption process.

For folks who aren’t near the North Kingstown location or don’t have time to make it, there are four other Wireless Zone locations that are accepting donations in the form of food, collars, leashes, toys, and blankets. The stores include 25 Airport Road in Warwick; 1700 Mendon Road in Cumberland; 599 Kingstown Road in Wakefield; and 182 Hillside Road in Cranston. These stores will be accepting donations during normal business hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

John Roque, store manager at North Kingstown Wireless Zone, has worked tirelessly on partnering with animal shelters and other Verizon stores to get this event to work, and says that the obvious purpose of doing this is to help animals get adopted that need new homes. Almost as important as adopting are the communities’ donations to the animal shelters. The aforementioned donation items are encouraged, but most any donation will be graciously accepted. Roque said that everyone is welcome to attend.

The broader purpose of the event, according to Roque, is to “strengthen the community we are involved in, because we do business in these communities every day.”

He said he wants to see more charitable events in the future that have more local businesses helping out and getting involved.

“The great news about it is, obviously we’re hoping to hold this event every year but we’re also thinking about doing other charitable events for other causes, for example autism, and we’re going to shoot for one of these events every quarter,” said Roque. He believes these events extend far beyond business and are really about creating a more inclusive, social community.

Roque wanted the community to know that the Wireless zones offer great discounts for military and first responders, something people may not be very aware of. But he made it clear that there will be absolutely no attempts to sell any products to people attending the event.

At the North Kingstown store, along with animals being available to view and adopt, there will also be food trucks, including a Del’s Lemonade stand, as well as face painting and other activities for the community to enjoy. Pet Valu, a local pet grooming service with locations in East Greenwich, East Providence and Barrington, will provide people with coupons for free dog walks and discounts on certain store items.

Roque said that he is trying to get animals adopted from kill shelters, which are facilities where, once they are filled to capacity, any animal that comes in must be euthanized. He said that this is exactly why this event needs to happen, to spread awareness of the grim situation many animals face.
