Pats rout Hawks in crosstown battle

The Pilgrim wrestling team continued its dominance of Division I on Wednesday evening, cruising past crosstown rival and four-time defending state champion Bishop Hendricken, 53-27.

The Pats won nine of 14 matches to improve to 9-1 and remain atop the Division I-South standings. Conversely, the Hawks’ struggles continued, dropping their record to 3-6 in league play.

Shawn Holland got Pilgrim on the board to start at 106, and Hendricken’s Nate Williams followed with a victory at 113 after a competitive bout with Eric Watts, 6-4.

The Pats then created some separation from Hendricken with three consecutive pins, as John Castaldi, Andrew Soares and Jacob Zuller handled their respective opponents at 120, 126 and 132.

The Hawks would battle back a bit with pins from defending state champions Devin Rivet and Dylan DiSano at 138 and 145, and junior Paul Arcand edged Kendall Watts at 152.

After that, though, Hendricken’s only win came at 285 on a pin by Nick Martino.

Pilgrim’s Garrison Potter and Tyler Parton recorded pins at 160 and 170, before Mitch Fielding was awarded a win via a forfeit at 182. The Pats’ streak of wins continued after that with pins from Steven Kavanagh (195) and Marcus Eckert (220) to increase the win margin.

Hendricken will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when it travels to Chariho for a 7 p.m. match.

Pilgrim is set to return to action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for a tri-match at North Providence High School.
