Summer for Adults

Despite the frequently chilly temperatures, summer has arrived so it’s time to plan attending the Summer Adult Programs at the Warwick Public Library. Civic Spaces

On Tuesday, July 7 at 7 p.m., Warwick historian Don D’Amato will discuss his new book, Warwick’s Villages: Glimpses from the Past. Apponaug, Conimicut, Hillsgrove, Pawtuxet and Pontiac are the villages upon which this book focuses. The History Press in Charleston published Warwick’s Villages earlier this year. Don is the author of numerous books about Warwick, including Warwick’s 350 Year Heritage, published in 1992. He writes a weekly local history column for the Warwick Beacon. Ethnic Culture

On Wednesday, July 22, at 7 p.m., the folk duo Atwater-Donnelly will perform in concert. Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly live in Foster and have been playing together for over 20 years. They are noted for their unique blend of traditional American and Celtic song and dance. Their instruments include guitar, banjo, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, tin whistle and harmonica. Aubrey and Elwood have performed and researched traditional folk music and dance in Appalachia, the Ozarks, New England and other places in the United States, as well as Ireland, England and Prince Edward Island. They have performed with or shared festival billing with folk legends, Jean Ritchie, Pete Seeger and Doc Watson. In 2009, Motif Magazine once again named Aubrey Best Female Vocalist. This event is supported by The Friends of the Library. War and Friendships

On Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m., Warwick non-fiction writer Les Rolston will discuss his new book, Long Time Gone: Neighbors Divided by Civil War that was published in 2009 by Mariner Publishing of Buena Vista, Va. On Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m., master photographer Cindy Horovitz Wilson will talk about The Art of Digital Photography. Wilson, a North Kingstown resident, will offer tips on improving your digital photographs. Cindy, an experienced photographer, does wedding and industrial photography but is noted for her spectacular landscape pictures of Rhode Island and New England. The above events are part of the new Adult Summer Reading Program: Master the Art of Reading. Anyone over age 18 may participate by registering at the Reference Desk. Once signed up, participants receive a very simple evaluation form. Every time an adult book or audio book is completed, the reader fills out an evaluation slip and drops it off at the Reference Desk. All participants become eligible for the weekly prize drawings, and the Grand Prizes drawn at the end of summer. The more books you read, the more chances of winning.

To paraphrase the Rhode Island Lottery “You can’t win if you don’t read!” The Adult Summer Reading Program is supported by The Friends of the Library and New Harvest Coffee Roasters.

All the events require registration. Call 739-5440, ext. 126 to register. The Warwick Public Library is located at 600 Sandy Lane.
