Resource Recovery takes care of e-waste for free
Computers and televisions cannot be placed in the trash or recycled in the state’s curbside program. Unwanted and damaged personal computer equipment and televisions can be recycled free of charge through Resource Recovery’s special program. Residents can also recycle computer monitors, mouse pointers, hard drives, modems, scanners, laptops and printers.
Through Eco-Depot, RIRRC accepts waste that cannot be commingled with regular trash. Examples include oil-based paint, automotive fluids, propane gas tanks, mercury containing devices, fertilizer and pool chemicals. If you are unsure if products in your home might be hazardous, look for a skull and crossbones on the label, the words “poison,” “hazardous,” and “danger,” or cautions to properly ventilate the area while cleaning.
Rhode Island land and waterways become polluted when household hazardous waste products are discarded improperly. They may harm septic systems, leach into drinking-water wells and degrade the quality of shores and riverbanks. Household hazardous waste poses a danger to human health as well as to pets and wildlife.
Appointments are not required for e-waste recycling. To make an Eco-Depot drop-off appointment, call 942-1430 ext. 241 or sign up online at www.rirrc.org and click the Eco-Depot logo at the bottom of the homepage.
“As Rhode Island’s summer months come to a close, the notion of fall cleaning is not far behind and Resource Recovery can help you properly dispose of unwanted toxic products from your home,” said Michael OConnell, executive director of RIRRC. “We encourage Rhode Islanders to take advantage of this opportunity. It’s easy, and you’ll be doing your part to preserve RI’s precious resources.”
