This week at CCRI
The Lady Knights, who are ranked third in the nation according to the NJCAA Division I poll, steamrolled Mercer County Community College 6-0 to stay perfect on the season. The Lady Knights are now 7-0.
Mercer, who lost a nail-biter to top-ranked Monroe Community College, figured to be CCRI’s toughest test. But a hat trick by Alexis Smith (Wakefield) sparked the Lady Knights to the huge win.
Ashley Choiniere (Hope), Alyssa Giudici (Cranston) and Jessica MacAndrew (Coventry) each added a goal and an assist.
At the other end, CCRI keeper Melody Lawrence (Foster) recorded her seventh consecutive shutout.
The Lady Knights will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Rochester, N.Y., to play top-ranked Monroe at 12 p.m.
Volleyball
The CCRI volleyball team spent the weekend in Chicago Heights, Ill., and came home with a third-place finish in the Prairie State Invitational.
In pool play, the Lady Knights lost their first match to South Suburban College but went on to a win over Morton College and Triton College. After a loss to Milwaukee Area Technical College, CCRI defeated South Suburban 25-23 and 26-24 to grab third place.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Cory Santos (Carlsbad, Calif.), who earned all-tournament honors with 10 aces and 60 assists. Suzanne Landry (Tiverton) finished the tourney with 32 kills and Alysa O’Neill (Johnston) added eight blocks.
The Lady Knights will travel to the Genesee Community College Tournament this weekend.
Cross Country
All of CCRI’s runners clocked their best times of the season at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. On the women’s side, Therese Kerin (East Greenwich) finished 39th with a time of 21:01. Jaden Riendeau (East Providence) finished 65th in 21:54.
Also running well were Janelle Piche (Coventry), who finished 148th and took almost two minutes off her time from the previous week, and Sarah Brodeur, who placed 159th.
Two men ran for the Knights, making their first attempt at the college distance of 8K. Brenden Dohoney (Warwick) placed 126th in 30:10 and Rob Brothers (Cranston) placed 177th in a time of 32:15.
Men's Soccer
The Knights traveled to Rochester, N.Y. for a match-up with top-20 ranked Monroe Community College and lost 6-0. The Knights held the Tribunes scoreless through the first half before the floodgates opened. CCRI dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
